Pre-Race

As we all have experienced at this point, 2020 has not been a year of normal racing. Since the end of May/beginning of June I decided to not let the lack of official racing deter me, and try to continue pushing the boundaries of what I could do in terms of training regardless of whether I would have a real opportunity to see where it got me or not. I was extremely fortunate to be connected with a group in NYC (Trials of Miles racing) that was organizing in-person races using strict safety protocols and application/time standard based entry to their races. Field sizes were kept to an absolute maximum of 25, and all runners had to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test in which the testing occurred no more than one week before the race. Mask wearing and social distancing were required for all race officials and spectators were kept to an absolute minimum (mostly just containing photographers and coaches).
I had previously competed in a track 10k at Icahn stadium put on by them, and had come out with a new PR of 30:32. I was happy with the PR, but wasn't sure if the time was fully representative of my fitness. My buildup had consisted of a peak mileage of 115 mpw that would go in cycles of 2 weeks up, one week down (so something like 115ish, 115ish, 80 with a day off) with pretty solid workouts. This went down a lot in the early parts of September when I experienced some minor back issues, but I was able to run easy for that period of time and not lose any fitness. I was notified of the half marathon being put on by Trials of Miles at the beginning of November, so my coach and I decided to immediately enact a taper and treat this as the goal race. I was just barely able to squeak into the field with PRs of 30:32 (10k), 1:07:07 (HM), and 2:23:43 (marathon). So I figured it would be fun to really just go out and race for time rather than worry about place, since there was no way I was going to beat the semi-pros at the front of the race.
The taper didn't feel good and the weather for the past few weeks was pretty bad, which resulted in some less-than ideal workouts leading up to this race, so the strategy was fairly straightforward: go out conservative, speed up as felt comfortable, and trust in fitness.
Got to the course about 30-40 minutes before I wanted to warm up, and looked around for friendly faces. Found three guys who I recognized from the 10k a few weeks ago and warmed up with them. Warmed up probably 40 minutes before the start of the race which was admittedly closer to the start than I wanted, but I ended up having more than enough time to do drills, use the bathroom, and drop off my bottle of Maurten 160 with half of a Nuun electrolyte tablet at the table.

Race

I had told my plan to go out "easy" people who had similar goals as me, so when the gun went off I expected that a few people would join me in a nice 5:10 first mile, but NOPE. I could already tell that even the last-place pack was running faster than I wanted, so I took control and formed my own group of just me allllll the way in the back. Came through the mile marker and heard someone calling off splits. The group in front of me went through in 4:59 and I went through in 5:05 (watch split later said 5:08). Yep, that's right. I went through the first mile of a half marathon in 5:05 and was DFL by 6 seconds. I actually started laughing a bit as we passed the start/finish area which occurred shortly after the first mile (the course was 4x3mile loops with a 1.1 mi out and back to start). I knew that few of the people in that pack were going to average that pace, and I didn't even think I would be able to do that, so they were probably just excited and getting dragged along by the group that was trying to break 64.
Its worth noting here that I had set my watch to kilometers before the race started. I always have it set to miles, so the purpose of changing the pace was to make it so that my pace gave me a general idea of what I was running, but didn't cause me to freak out so I could focus on effort moreso than numbers. The watch read out in the 3:10-3:08 range for much of the start, and that registered to me as being right on track with what I wanted. I worked my way up to back group, and before long found myself at the front of that group stringing them out while heading into 4 miles, which marked the start of the 2nd of 4 loops around the course. I took the Maurten gel100/caf100 I had stored in my back shorts pocket, and washed it down with a bottle of water from the table by the start/finish, and pressed onwards.
Soon I found myself moving up on people who had rapidly fallen off of the 64-minute group, although my pace stayed steady at ~3:08/k. I went through the first 10k in ~31:15, and took that as a good sign, because structurally and aerobically I felt GREAT. At mile 7 I took my bottle of maurten/nuun as I started my 3rd of 4 loops, and suddenly the pace on my watch changed. I started to see 3:03/k, and my mind went "nice, that also seems like a good pace". However, as I kept hitting mile markers, I would hear people call out the cumulative time, and I began to notice a trend. The number of minutes would increase by ~5, but the number of seconds was going down. My brain all of the sudden realized, "wait, 3:03 time 10 equals 30:30... you're currently running your PR 10k pace!!!"
Rather than let this freak me out, I let it empower me, and only drive the pace down faster. 3:02, 3:01, 3:02... Soon I found myself heading into my last lap with 51:09 on the clock. Since the loop was ~3 miles, I realized this meant I needed a 14:50 last three miles to break 66, a huge stretch goal I had set for myself. In my mind this seemed like a tall order, but I realized that the pace I had been running at for the last 3 miles was already enough! Furthermore, I still didn't feel like I was going to slow down, so I held pace, pushing ever so slightly down on the gas. I started to catch more people, and saw the pace drop to 3:00/k. With one mile to go I knew that I had sub 66 in the bag, but wasn't sure by how much. I drove the arms, increased my stride rate, and finally felt that burn of really working hard. As I crossed the line I saw 65:30-something on the clock and was absolutely overjoyed.

Post-race

My last full kilometer was 2:57 by my watch, with the last 2 miles being 9:39, last 5k being 15:01, and my final 10k being 30:17, a PR by 15 seconds that I had set only three weeks prior. It was an unbelievable feeling. I never expected to run my best time by this much. I never imagined that at any point in my life I would have PR'd in multiple distances (in this case, 10k, 15k, 10 mile, and HM) all in the same race. The last six months of the best, but also hardest training I had ever done had finally come to fruition, I could consider this a proper end point to the season, and I had a highlight to look back on from the crazy year that was 2020.
I had a long drive back home after the race, and when I had made it back I had around 30 messages on my phone and 20+ DMs on Instagram asking about details from the race and congratulating me. I had experienced breakthroughs in training before, but this one felt different. I really felt as though this race marked the realization that some of my goals down the line (OTQ, top 10 american at a world major) might actually be in the cards. There's a bright future coming up to see.

2020.11.20 01:16 TopPangolin Another NYC license question re police interaction.

I had an order of protection issued against a random man who sucker punched me while I was at a hotel. He was drunk and quickly arrested I received a letter in the mail months later.
I was driving and was given a ticket for speed contest. I plead down to a seatbelt violation and paid my ticket.
The NYC license for long guns questionnaire asks about incidents like these and requests dates and locations. I do not have the dates anymore as they were over a decade ago. Is it ok to leave them off or how do I go about finding details of these events from my past?
Apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum for such a ridiculous question.

2020.11.18 00:48 First_Doom Race Report: From 0 to (Tunnel Hill) 100

Race Information

Goals

Background and Training

Well, maybe this post's title is a bit off. In 2017-2018, I had a brief but stupidly intense triathlon phase, going from no running (or any other) experience to finishing a half Ironman and two full Ironmans over about 8 months. Then, nothing. Fortunately and unfortunately, I moved to NYC -- where most my friends were -- and worked an awesome but demanding year-long job for the feds. With 70-hour workweeks and 4am weekend nights out drinking, fitness took a backseat. I went for the occasional hungover run but limited my exercise mostly to lifting. During one of these hungover runs, with last night's IPAs making their way out of my pores, I had some weird musing where I thought hey, running is nice, I should do this more -- why not make it 100 miles? For some reason that stuck. My year-long job was up shortly after this, I took a super long vacation to close out the summer of 2019, and then began a (slightly) less demanding job in the private sector. It was time to get back on the wagon -- sort of.
In the fall of 2019 I started my training, for all intents and purposes, from zero. I ran 11 (slow) total miles my first week. Then 13. Etc., etc. October 2019 to the New Year can reasonably be described as very informal base building. I slowly worked my way up to 40 miles/week, prioritized lifting over running, and was unwilling to give up late nights out with friends.
Things formalized a bit at the start of 2020. We'll call January to May my 50-miler phase. I followed a plan from the ultrarunning book Relentless Forward Progress and put in some solid months of running 5 times a week for a total of 40-55 weekly miles. Tuesdays were typically mid-length days with intervals or a tempo portion, Wednesdays short and easy, Thursdays less short but still easy, long runs on Saturdays, and short shakeouts on Sundays. I cut back a little on the late nights and drinking, but still spent a lot of time and energy lifting -- more for the sake of vanity than any purported running benefits. There were two breakthroughs in this period: a 37-mile run around Manhattan's perimeter (and then some), and then a DIY 50-miler May 2nd, in place of a canceled race. I managed the 50-miler in under 8 hours, and figured I was good to ramp up to 100.
From May to November I followed a self-modified version of another plan from Relentless Forward Progress. My training resembled that of the prior block but with longer runs, an added 6-8 miles on Fridays, and long runs on both Saturdays and Sundays. I quickly built my mileage to consistent weeks in the low 70s, and peaked with a few weeks in the 80s. I only ran singles because doubles aren't much of a reality as an NYC lawyer. And I stopped lifting legs because (1) with gyms closed, they're frankly a bore to work, and (2) lifting legs was the last thing I felt like doing with the uptick in mileage. I continued my gratuitous, at-home upper body workouts. I came out somewhat resembling a UFC fighter with lanky runner's legs. Oh well. Breakthroughs during this period came from a 70-mile weekend 7 weeks out from the race (50k Saturday morning, marathon that night, and half mary Sunday morning), and a 3-week block right before the taper where I averaged more than 75 miles per week and felt strong. I also noticed I had some semblance of speed -- stringing together several 6:30-6:50 miles on tempo days was comfortable, and mile repeats in the 5:50-6:15 range were no problem. Nice little confidence boost.

Pre-race

My girlfriend Natalie and I travelled to Vienna, Illinois, the Thursday before the race. She really took a leap of faith here considering we had been dating not even 2.5 months -- for some reason she agreed to watch me hobble around in the woods all day/night in the world's least exciting spectator's sport.
Fast forward to Saturday morning at 5am. I woke up and had a cup of coffee, a PB&J and a half, a banana, and pretzels. Weird breakfast but it seemed to work during the Ironman days. Considering I had been caffeine-free the two weeks prior, the coffee got me amped. I couldn't wait for the 8:00 am start.

Race

Tunnel Hill 100 is a 100.1-mile double out and back on a smooth, crushed limestone (I think?) trail. It's nearly pancake flat, with only two long-ish but gentle hills. There's no such thing as an easy 100, but for a neophyte like myself, it's the perfect entry point -- especially when the wintery weather holds off. The number of participants was limited this year, and the race felt very safe. It's a wonderfully organized event, and I'm happy to call it my first official ultra.
For all the planning that I put into this race, I really botched the start. My 5-person wave started at 8:00 am, and I walked up to the line 20 seconds before the figurative gun went off. I forgot to take my mask off. I hadn't put my phone or airpods away when the race started. I even forgot to start my watch. The first minute was a fumble-fest, jogging while trying to deal with these things. I couldn't help but laugh. After a couple minutes I got myself in order, put my playlist on, and settled in.
Miles 1-30. Ah, the good times. I was running, smiling, enjoying the beautiful weather, jamming out to a playlist that jumped from obscure progressive metal to Lizzo. I ate well, hydrated well, and drew some motivation from Natalie at the aid stations. My miles were all between 9:00 and 10:00 minutes, and felt easy. I knew this wasn't sustainable but, considering anything above 9:00 is my very easy pace on any normal day, I wasn't confident that going slower would keep me much more fresh long term. Not much else to say here. Get it while the going is good.
Miles 31-60. These miles were also wonderful. My pace fell back into the upper 9:00s to upper 10:00s, but I felt good. I finally introduced a bit of a run + walk strategy here. My stomach hadn't turned, and I ate whatever sounded good at any given aid station -- bars, gels, turkey wraps, candy, fruit, chips, PB&J, whatever. I kept up with hydration, alternating between Sword and water. I also began taking a caffeine pill every couple hours for an added boost. I arrived at mile 50 in somewhere around 8 hours and 25 minutes. With Natalie's help I got my phone on a portable charger, sized up my shoes a half size, snagged my headlamp, and got back to it. I really don't think an 8:25 50-mile split is a great idea for a sub-20 goal, but dammit, the mental boost of knowing I could average 13:30 miles from there on out was huge. Every future mile I clicked off under 13:30 felt as if I were putting time in a bank, and I found that motivating.
Miles 61-90. These miles were not wonderful. I was able to force down food but wow, the GI issues. Turns out my stomach doesn't like being shaken around for 60 miles. I had some quick miles here, but also some very slow ones between the stomach issues and added walking. Natalie was a godsend, being at the aid stations offering support during the literal and metaphorical darker times.
There were two significant points during these miles. The first came in the early 70s, when I hit my lowest point in the race. I hurt, had to take walk breaks every 15-20 minutes, and for the first time all race began questioning whether sub-20 was possible. My mind gave my body the middle finger and decided that 50 minutes of solid running, no walking, was the cure. It was. I clicked off 4+ good miles and received a temporary trip out of the mental gutter as a reward.
The second significant event occurred around mile 85. It might or might not have been a miscalculation of time vs. pace (after all, my mind wasn't too sharp at this point), but in any event I again thought that sub 20 was slipping away. Once more, my mind gave my poor body the finger, and I set off running at a sustained pace quicker than anything in the last 20 miles. I reached mile 90 at 17:20, 10 minutes quicker than was even possible by my (mis?)calculations. I could average 16-minute miles the rest of the way, and some of the remaining miles were even back down the main "hill" in "Tunnel Hill." How nice.
Miles 91-100.1. My mile-90 elation was soon washed away. A storm rolled in, bringing thunder and lightning, blowing branches into the trail, pouring rain completely sideways, and killing the visibility coming from my now-fading headlamp. It had been warm so I was in a tank and shorts, but was soon shivering. Luckily I had grabbed a jacket from Natalie earlier in the night and tied it around my waist. It offered a little warmth, but not enough. I was also worried about Natalie driving by herself, without phone service in rural Illinois, during the wee hours of the morning during this storm.
I drudged on the best I could. I noticed that the top of my left foot was absolutely killing me, probably from tying my shoe too tight -- quick aside, even today it's massively swollen and I'm praying there's not a stress fracture or other damage. I was hellbent on getting to the mile-97 aid station by 19:00. No matter how bad things got, I could knock out 3 miles in an hour. I hit that final aid station -- the beautiful sight that it was -- 5 minutes early. Rather than walk it on home, I ran/limped what I could. Still shivering but smiling, I crossed the finish line at 3:46 am, with a time of 19:46:25. I thanked the race director (and, stupidly, asked him if I was done), received my beautiful sub-20 buckle and other swag, moaned and groaned for a bit, then left with Natalie. More than a year from its inception, my hungover idea of running 100 miles had come to fruition. Who woulda thought?
**\* Here's where I have to say Natalie was freakin' amazing, being there from start to finish, fully supportive, and going above and beyond. I don't know if prior to meeting me she even knew what an ultramarathon was, yet she managed to crew the race to perfection all on her own. Hell, she thought of ways to support me that I hadn't. I owe her big time.

Post-race, What's Next, and Gear

I dealt with the post-race pain (which honestly was worse than any pain during the race -- man, my left foot really hurt), got my appetite back, slept not at all, and drank some beers. As of now the foot seems to be getting slightly better, and everything else is recovering really well -- amputate the foot and I'm feeling pretty damn good. The next two weeks are for more beers and general gluttony.
If not injured, I plan to exercise a bunch in December but with no structure; just for my own enjoyment, doing whatever feels fun on a given day. Then, to my friends' and (probably) girlfriend's chagrin, I plan to get back after it as soon as 2021 kicks off. I don't know exactly what's next, but I'm sure it'll be painful. Some thoughts are getting into cycling and racing if the pandemic eases up, Everesting on a bike, running the calendar club, R2R2R, summiting a big mountain, shooting for a Boston qualification, setting mile and 5k PRs, etc. We'll see.
Finally, because gear was a big mystery to me when getting into this all, I wanted to give a rundown of some of my equipment in case it's helpful to others in a similar spot. I tracked my run with the Coros Apex. It read 100.7 miles and had 58% battery when I finished, even using the backlight and normal GPS. Great accuracy and greater battery life. I ran in size 10.5 Brooks Glycerins (my go-to training shoe) for the first 50 miles and size 11 Glycerins for the second 50. I wore gaiters but they probably weren't necessary since the trail had been groomed recently. I used some generic store-brand running socks that for some reason have always worked for me. My toes look like I ran a 5k, not 100 miles, and I don't have a single blister. I truly think I nailed my shoe/sock game other than tying the left one too tight. My shorts of choice were Salomon Sense Ultra (discontinued I think) -- I have awful chafing issues, yet with only one pre-race application of Bodyglide I ran comfortably the whole way and didn't chafe. I ran the first chilly miles in the long sleeve Black Diamond Rhythm Tee and the rest in a fancy Nike tech tank -- both felt amazing and didn't chafe. I threw on the ON Weather Jacket when it rained; a great piece of gear but I could have used something heavier. Rather than a pack, I opted for a small Nathan hand bottle with a pouch, where I kept my phone and airpods. I'm pretty good at hydrating and the aid stations were frequent enough that I got by just fine. I wore a cloth Nathan running belt for extra storage -- food, zip block bag with caffeine pills and stomach stuff, etc. Good gear choices all around, I think.
Alright, I'm all written out. It's slowly setting in that I actually ran 100 continuous miles. Gotta say I'm pretty proud. I hope this report was entertaining enough for you all. It's probably better suited for the ultrarunning sub, but I've gained so much knowledge and insight from AdvancedRunning that I couldn't imagine posting this anywhere else.

2020.11.17 04:16 Mister_reindeer (Very Lengthy) Thoughts from a First-Time Miracleman Reader

I posted this on the Miracleman subreddit a few days ago, and it was suggested by one user that I repost it here, so I am doing so!
Long-time Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman fan, first-time Miracleman reader here. I recently read through all the 1980s and 1990s material, as well as George Khoury’s excellent Kimota! and Pádraig Ó Méalóid’s Poisoned Chalice. I’ve long been fascinated by the behind-the-scenes history of the character, and it was about time I got around to actually reading it. I loved it even more than I thought I would. Such wonderful characterizations, such a cool and dense mythology. It’s almost impossible to choose a favorite artist on the series. I didn’t think anyone would top Garry Leach for me, but I think Totleben must be the best. What he and Moore inspired one another to create in Olympus is a masterwork. Buckingham is tough to even compare to the other guys because he’s such a chameleon, but The Golden Age is such a visual feast that he deserves a shout-out too.
Having said that, I have so many things about the series I want to talk about. Some of them are questions (albeit ones that I fear are unanswerable), some are nitpicky critiques / minor things that bugged me (I previously made a nitpicky post about the MM Family’s ages, so I won’t bring that up again). I hope that it isn’t bad form to drop such a wordy post, but things seem understandably pretty slow here and I hope maybe a few people will be interested in some discussion about something I mention below. I’m just so excited to talk about this series. I also hope the below doesn’t sound too critical, because as I said, I loved the comic, but certain things stood out precisely because Moore and Gaiman’s writing is typically so airtight. Anyway, here are some random points I jotted down while I was reading…
In “The Approaching Light”: Why on Earth do Miracleman and Evelyn Cream spend the night in a hotel sleeping and wait a full day before rescuing Liz? It seems like a completely unnecessary delay when she’s in potentially imminent danger, on top of the already dubious storytelling stall that Miracleman has to take a plane (!) to Paraguay because the wind-chill would freeze Cream if he flew (okay, that’s a nice realistic twist on the usual “superhero carrying a normal mortal human” cliché, but why does he even need Cream to come with him?).
In my opinion, that Book 2 period gets unfairly criticized for being “uneven” (even by Moore himself). Changes in artist aside, Book 2 is actually a more unified story overall than Book 1 (which is not to say that the writing is better than Book 1 necessarily, just that it holds together better as a “book”). That being said, there are some uncharacteristically dicey storytelling choices Moore makes. Why would Gargunza just sit around biding his time in Paraguay as he grows older and closer to death, hoping for the off-chance that Mike will someday remember his post-hypnotic keyword? Why not make an anonymous phone call or send a letter that just says “Kimota” to trigger Mike’s memory? Why does he give Mike and Cream a three-minute head-start from Miracledog? This is such a cliché comic book villain gimmick of the type that would make Adrian Veidt cringe. Why wouldn’t he just have the dog tear them apart then and there in the living room? Finally, Gargunza saying Miracledog’s post-hypnotic keyword “Steppenwolf” in front of Mike is such a bad plan. He essentially hands him the disarming mechanism.
Despite having read two wonderful books on the history of Miracleman replete with interviews with all the relevant parties, I still can’t find a single good explanation for why Marvelman stopped appearing in Warrior after #21. Moore exasperatingly keeps blaming his falling-out with Dez Skinn, and neither Khoury nor Ó Méalóid ever calls him out on the fact that this makes no sense since he continued submitting V for Vendetta scripts to Warrior for another five issues after Marvelman disappeared, up until the very end of the magazine (Skinn himself, slippery and self-serving as most of his quotes are, is the only one who actually points this out). It also makes no sense that Moore specifically traces the moment of no return to a censorship argument over a story that appeared in Warrior #7, when he kept submitting Marvelman scripts for another 14 issues after that! Skinn, and Khoury, convincingly argue that it was the Moore/Davis rift that killed the strip, but a quote from Davis in Poisoned Chalice indicates that they were still on decent terms several months later, with Moore and Jamie Delano visiting Davis’s house round the time Delano took over Captain Britain. Skinn himself has admitted that Marvel UK’s legal threats weren’t the real reason he stopped publishing Marvelman but were subterfuge for whatever else was going on (the first letter from Marvel is dated 9/21, whereas Marvelman’s final appearance in Warrior had been cover dated August, presumably on sale earlier than that). There just doesn’t seem to be any particularly good reason for the strip to disappear at that particular moment.
I have to say, and I guess this will probably be a so-called hot take, I don’t think Chuck Beckum’s art on the series is the worst. It’s competent, stiff and completely uninspired, but not bad—just not on the level of most of the other amazing series artists. Rick Veitch’s art on #9, however, is wildly uneven, and in my opinion way worse than Beckum’s in many spots. Some stuff is beautiful (much of the birth scene), but some is downright ugly. In particular, Liz’s face barely looks like a human face in a lot of panels (it really kills that two-page flying truck sequence, which should be beautiful, but every single drawing of her is just so sketchy and off-model it detracts from what should be the joy and wonder). It’s strange, because his work on the following issue is pretty consistently solid. This isn’t even down to the change in inker (although Ridgway is of course wonderful). If you compare the pencils for #9 and #10, the difference in quality is jarring. I wonder if he was rushed to get #9 out in a hurry due to the flood-related delay at Eclipse? (#10 notably was released five months after #9, so perhaps he took more time with it.)
I know I said I wouldn’t harp on the MM Family’s ages again, but…Miraclewoman’s backstory in “Aphrodite” says Miracledog was already around in the 1950s-60s, which would make him quite old in 1982, unless this was a different dog (a dog who looks quite a bit like Pluto can be seen in one panel when Gargunza shoots his assistant). Or I guess if he spent a good deal of those two decades in Miracledog form, Pluto would have aged less. Answered my own question there!
Again harping on Miraclewoman’s backstory in “Aphrodite,” isn’t it a little weird that the Spookshow confuses Young Nastyman’s body for Young Miracleman’s? YN is in a volcano in Iceland whereas YM was supposed to be quite a ways away over the North Sea when he encountered the bomb.
Did Young Nastyman not have a failsafe word? It seems odd that he wakes up and overpowers Gargunza, when Gargunza predicted this exact type of occurrence two years earlier and put a mechanism in place to prevent it in the others.
It’s somewhat surprising that Winter is the first super-offspring, given that Young Nastyman seems to go on quite the tear for a bit, Miraclewoman seem to have a pretty healthy sexual appetite, and Kid Miracleman was presumably doing heaven knows what for the better part of two decades. I guess KM probably killed all his conquests immediately after, though.
In “Hermes,” rather prophetically predicting our own 2020 reality, Miracleman says that due to screens allowing people to work from home, there are “no cities” as of 1987. But London still appears to be very densely populated, and we later see in Gaiman’s run (#24) that NYC is also still very much a thing.
In “Hermes,” the Qys Kingqueen says Earth is the first “new world in intelligent space” since the Qys and the Gulf World/Warpsmiths first met, yet one issue later, in “Pantheon,” Phon Mooda claims to have seen “a dozen” new worlds. Given that the two empires first met 11,000 Earth years ago (again, per “Hermes”), this presumably makes Phon Mooda quite old!
I have to say, I wasn’t thrilled with Liz’s characterization as it evolved throughout the series. She started out as a strong, witty, smart character, by far a stronger character than Mike: she is carrying them financially, and she is the one who investigates and figures out a lot about Miracleman’s powers (as Winter points out, Mike/Miracleman himself is surprisingly incurious about his own powers). Liz correctly guesses that he has a force field (whereas Miracleman incorrectly first thinks he has “tough skin” and Liz points out why this is absurd). She correctly guesses that the basis of his strength is his mind, and guesses not only that Miracleman’s body is separate from Mike’s but even manages to deduce the existence of underspace/infra-space! But as the story progresses, she goes through the rather unfortunate damsel in distress phase, then basically ceases to be an independent character at all as Winter manipulates her. I do like the closure and strength Moore gives her in that short final scene (Moore essentially allows her to voice the moral of the entire Olympus storyline), but it was sad to see her go from a fully fleshed-out character to almost a non-entity. Given that she was basically the main supporting character at the start of the strip, I would have liked to see her continue as a subplot in Gaiman’s run (just as Johnny Bates would periodically pop up for a page in Moore’s installments here and there), tracking her perspective on MM’s brave new world. There’s no reason she had to disappear from the story entirely just because she is no longer with Miracleman.
The only flaw in all of John Totleben’s incredible art for this series: during Mike’s “suicide,” he clearly has the two missing fingers that were bitten off by Miracledog (a shot of him climbing the mountain unfortunately puts his right hand, and the fingers at issue, into the very clear foreground).
As brilliant as “Nemesis” is, I do have some issues with it: it’s annoying, from both a plot and a character standpoint, that Phon Mooda disappears from the London battle without any explanation. One also has to wonder why one of the Warpsmiths doesn’t warp Kid Miracleman into the sun or some equally deadly environment—or at least to some star system far from civilization where he couldn’t do damage. Miracleman makes the (frankly silly) excuse that Aza Chorn keeps warping KM within London because he doesn’t know many locations on Earth, but in the Warpsmith solo stories, they seem to have the ability to warp across large distances of the universe in a moment. There doesn’t seem to be any basis for their warping being restricted to Earth. Finally—and I can’t take credit for this one, I saw it in a blog post comment—why wouldn’t Miracleman have tried yelling “Abraxas” to turn KM back to Johnny Bates? It’s possible that Gargunza gave each subject a different failsafe word, of course, but it would certainly be worth at least trying.
Based on what I’ve read online, this will probably also be an unpopular opinion, but...I’m fine with the censorship of the N-word. I hate to call out any particular person, but there was a message board post I read that seems to me to be emblematic of the sentiment I’ve seen expressed, and I present it in that spirit: “If I've opened a polybag to read a story about a naked black man imagining himself running naked through a Carribean mythological nightmare, or a massacred London full of assorted, dismembered body parts, I think I can handle the N-word.” I think the missing part of this equation is that, for a certain group of people, that particular word has a long, hurtful history, and can be highly triggering. They likely aren’t expecting to encounter it in a book like this, which doesn’t deal with race in any meaningful way, and quite frankly, I don’t think the word adds anything artistically. The Evelyn Cream monologues, with the weird fixation about voodoo and the jungle, are rather problematic to begin with IMO, and I don’t know that Kid Miracleman using a racial slur really contributes much of value to the story to justify using the term (I think we understand he’s evil by this point without using such potentially hurtful language). In contrast, I think the use of the word in Watchmen is much stronger from an artistic standpoint, as it depicts a poor black man using it ingratiatingly as a term of solidarity to a wealthy black man who believes he has moved beyond such labels. In Watchmen, it feels both natural and necessary to the moment/character arc, and therefore printing the word itself adds to the power of its use. In Miracleman, in both instances, it feels like a young Moore is trying to do something (with good intentions, I’m sure) that doesn’t really gel to justify the use of such divisive language, and so I’m fine with the censorship. (Now, we can discuss the hypocrisy of Marvel leaving the equally misguided use of the N-word uncensored in reprints of Chris Claremont’s run on X-Men, but that doesn’t mean they were wrong to censor it on Miracleman—just that they have an inconsistent editorial standard.) That being said, I am a tad upset that “f----t” (censorship my own) was changed to “fairy” in “Notes from the Underground.” Again, for me, it comes down to balancing how hurtful the word is against the value to the story. In this case, Gargunza going for the jugular in attacking Warhol’s sexuality was the entire emotional turning-point of the story (contrasting this with, say, Kid Miracleman calling Huey Moon the N-word when the two have no history whatsoever and there is no emotional resonance). Changing this to Gargunza calling him a “fairy” softens the blow so much, and really removes a lot of the punch. Context matters, and I feel that this was a moment that did justify using the hurtful language because it made a point, although I’m assuming Gaiman approved the change.
That scene of Miracleman and Miraclewoman having sex in the sky is horrifying, in terms of them just casually throwing their clothes off. She drops her stiletto shoes down over London! Those could kill someone!
Any theories on why Miracledog becomes much much smaller when Miracleman retrieves him from underspace to become “Fenris”? It seems to be the same body story-wise.
Any thoughts on why Miracleman in particular seems to become the figurehead Zeus/Abrahamic God figure in the pantheon? It seems Miraclewoman is equally qualified if not moreso (same for Winter, for that matter, although she probably can’t be bothered with petty human concerns). It seems a little sexist that she’s relegated to the role of “goddess of love” when she’s generally presented as more intelligent, sensitive, resourceful, and competent than MM.
I wonder, why did Buckingham revert to the older Garry Leach costume design for Miracleman, when Moore made the “evolving uniform” thing a plot point going all the way back to Warrior #4 (and Gaiman/Buckingham themselves eventually referenced this in #24 when they drop the “MM” logo altogether)? Did he just stylistically prefer the original Leach design, I guess? Bucky does finally draw the “evolved” version of the Olympus-era costume in #24 during the flashback to “Nemesis,” but even there he gets it wrong—MM correctly has the 1985-era collar (as seen in “The Yesterday Gambit” and “Nemesis”), but he also appears to have the more jagged “MM” chest logo he didn’t develop until ca. 1987.
Not sure how many people catch this, but in “Notes from the Underground,” Warhol references Divine hanging out with “Glenn.” This presumably references Divine’s “real” name, Glenn Milstead. Presumably, Mors cloned two bodies, in a neat parallel to Miracleman/Mike Moran and co.’s dual identities/bodies.
Any thoughts on the oblique Spaceman predictions in “Carnival” and “When Titans Clash!”? The one in “Carnival” keeps talking about “old friends from the future,” which seems not to bode well for what Young Miracleman’s return portends.
Are all the background characters in “Carnival” cameos/references, or are some just fun designs? I spotted someone dressed as a “rainbow ghost” (a Qys form Winter takes in “Winter’s Tale”), a guy dressed as Captain Britain, and of course, guys dressed as Wonder Woman, Spiderman, and Golden Age Flash. I’m assuming the big white thing with a lower-case “a” on its chest (in the same panel as the rainbow ghost) is a reference to something, but I’m having trouble placing it.
What’s the deal with the clock gears motif on all Dave McKean’s covers for The Golden Age? It reminds me of Dr. Manhattan, but it doesn’t seem to really have anything to do with The Golden Age storyline.
I found the final pages of the Apocrypha issues really funny, where they basically read as Gaiman (pretty accurately) criticizing what the other writers got wrong about Miracleman. I doubt that he meant it in a cruel way (by all accounts, he loved the idea of letting other writers play in his sandbox writing “imaginary” stories), but it does come across as a bit bitchy in a charming way. (I also have to quickly gripe that Fred Schiller’s story, “A Bright and Sunny Day,” makes no sense. The Apocrypha stories are generally silly and easy to ignore, but this one really gave me a headache. KM is able to speed up to the professor’s pace, but then when he leaves the professor for twelve minutes the professor inexplicably ages twelve years, and then KM spends 57 years with him but inexplicably doesn’t age even though the professor does?)
Gaiman generally does an excellent job of keeping track of Moore’s continuity and obviously has an encyclopedic of the earlier stories/issues. However, one weird thing I noticed. In the framing story for Apocrypha #1, Miracleman mocks the “Scrapbook” story because Miraclewoman calls MM “Mike” in the story—the implication being that he and MW no longer use their “human” names. However, in “Hermes,” Miraclewoman sort of gently teases MM for calling her “Miraclewoman,” and suggests it would be easier if he called her Avril. For the rest of Olympus, up to and including the “present day” 1987 stuff, they call each other “Mike” and “Avril.” It seems odd that Gaiman inexplicably flipped this.
Another small, nitpicky point: The comic books we see in the framing sequence for Apocrypha #3 have prices on the cover, and the envelope they were sent in has postage. This seems to be a continuity error, since Miracleman banished money very soon after making himself known to the public.
I know Bucky redid all the background paintings for the sky/fireworks display at the end of “Carnival,” leading to the final page being totally different between the Eclipse printing and the Marvel editions. He also almost completely redrew the bulk of “Retrieval,” which he had expressed unhappiness with in George Khoury’s book. He has also said that he was in the process of completely redrawing #23, #24 and the unpublished #25 for Marvel, to bring them in line with the new art style he has developed for The Silver Age (I’m very excited for this…the original #23 and #24 are kind of stiff and really not Bucky’s best work, and he has really grown as an artist since). I’m generally not a fan of this kind of revisionism (George Lucas removing Sebastian Shaw’s eyebrows, etc.), but for some reason I don’t so much mind Bucky improving on his old stuff (the new “fire” display is so much more beautiful). My question is, did Bucky (or any other artist) redraw any other old material, aside from the examples I already mentioned?
I have to imagine that the redrawn #23 will also remove all references to destroying the World Trade Center. The opening of #23 is rather odd, insofar as it’s the exact thing Moore was fighting against in “Nemesis” (big dumb superhero battle with massive property damage and no human casualties). I at first assumed NYC was now uninhabited (since Miracleman says in Olympus that there are no more cities), and had been converted into a superhero playground. But we then see in the very next issue that NYC is still very much populated. So is what we see in #23 a dummy version constructed as a training ground, or what?
The Kay we meet in The Silver Age (who wants to have sex with everyone) is presumably the same Kay Mist mentions in “Winter’s Tale” (she says Kay is the only Miraclebaby besides Winter who can warp, because she is “glonzo”).
Any thoughts on the wallpaper design in #24? It pops up throughout the issue, also appearing on both Jordan’s vest and the Spaceman’s clothes. Strange little motif.
What is the general consensus on whether or not Young Miracleman is actually in love with Miracleman? Is he closeted and in denial, or is Miraclewoman wrong? Or (given that she’s generally portrayed as nigh-infallible, especially when it comes to matters of the heart) is it possible that she deliberately lied to Miracleman for some reason? The end of that issue is rather ominous. Why does Miracleman tell her they need to talk? Note that he calls her “Avril” here, for the only time in the Gaiman issues, like a person calling their spouse by their full given name when angry.
Dez Skinn generally comes across as a slippery bloke with a selective memory, but his description of Grant Morrison’s story in George Khoury’s Kimota! is particularly infuriating: “a discussion between Kid Marvelman and a Catholic priest, and it was quite fascinating because Kid Marvelman argued a very good case against organized religion. Nobody was flying, no beams from anybody’s eyes, but a bloody clever script…” I like some of Morrison’s stuff and I’d been excited to get to that story for awhile based off of Skinn’s description. Imagine my disappointment when the story was LITERALLY the exact opposite of what Skinn described! What the hell, Dez.
A few more random thoughts: I also reread V for Vendetta alongside Miracleman, and it was interesting to track some parallels that popped up in the evolution of the two stories. For instance, in Warrior #11, both Marvelman and V conclude their “Book 1” with a story that reveals the source of their powers comes from secret government experiments. Also, this is probably common knowledge, but an interesting piece of trivia: It’s a regular source of debate who might have built the Fate computer in V for Vendetta, with many theorizing it might have been V (I personally don’t subscribe to this). The only truly definitive answer is in Moore’s “Quality Universe” timeline, which reveals that Gargunza in fact built it! I’m assuming Moore scrapped this “head canon” as the V story progressed (for one, the computer in the finished story seems to have been built much later than the 1960s), but fun piece of trivia.
Does anyone have any idea what is happening in the Miracleman: Triumphant pages that cropped up online? I know the story involved Miracleman going to see a fortune teller, and it appears from the illustrations (sadly with no dialogue written in) that this gimmick rather unsurprisingly becomes a framing story for something (an imaginary tale? The future?). The main story seems to show a dark-haired woman (Liz?) yelling at Miraclewoman, Gargunza and the Warhols (!) seemingly leading some sort of uprising in Olympus along with Miracledog (and possibly aligned with Winter and the Miraclebabies?), and maybe-Liz knocking Gargunza unconscious with one of the Warhols’ oversized Campbell’s soup cans (groan). The art by Mike Deodato is slick, nothing incredible but certainly easy on the eyes; the credited writer Fred Burke seems to have done very little in the industry (he edited the Total Eclipse crossover, which doesn’t bode well). Overall, I hate to pass judgment without being able to read the full thing, but what is available looks pretty dumb, and it’s probably for the best that this never saw the light of day.

2020.11.15 00:45 Mister_reindeer Thoughts From a First-Time Reader

2020.11.10 02:33 derpyderp2049 NYS Speeding Ticket - 72 in a 55, with history, and honestly the courts scare me. What are the realistic outcomes?

So, first the history: in 2016/2017 within two weeks of eachother I got popped pretty badly for speeding twice in NYC. Looks bad on paper (75 in a 45 for one, I forget the other) but in reality was moving with the flow of traffic on two separate highways. Went to the courthouse to pay the fines and they wanted to take my license then and there for accruing 10pts if I pled guilty to both tickets. Ended up retaining a lawyer on-site who did the work for me and said I wouldn't have to show up for the court dates. Once the dust settled on each case I paid the fines and thought that was that.
Turns out the points are still on my license, and my dumbass got caught out listening to some excellent music and misjudging my speed on a winding highway a couple months ago. I've just received the letter notifying me of a meeting with the prosecuter, set for next month. My questions at this point are: - am I facing a suspension of my license/possible jail time? - outside of the traffic court lawyer, I've had exactly zero experience in finding/retaining legal counsel. How would I go about doing so for a district twoish hours away? - would taking a defensive driving course between now and then stand me in good stead?
Any and all advice is welcome, I can already feel my anxiety level ratcheting up to 11 because of my ignorance. Thank you in advance.

2020.11.08 21:17 TrollBond 29 [M4F] Utah/SLC - Looking for something meaningful! 💖

Let’s face it, online dating sucks. People look for hookups and sex. I just want someone to come home to. Someone whose texts make me blush. Someone who I can eventually wake up next to. I'm a super cheesy, hopeless romantic person. I give random hugs and forehead kisses. But it’s not something I like doing unless I’m dating that person. However, I am not looking to go super fast or super slow. I want to go just the right speed. I want someone with who I can become a better me. I'm trying to get fit, so it would be nice to have someone to do that with. 😊
Anyway, here's some relevant stuff about me: I grew up in India and moved here for my job. I was brought up with Hindu beliefs, but I'm agnostic now. I respect everyone's beliefs as long as they're not choked down on me. I started going to hikes after moving to Utah, and I love it. Especially if it ends with a waterfall. Outdoors helps me think through stuff. Once this pandemic is over, I'm planning to visit NYC and Hawaii, the top 2 things on my bucket list. 😍
Oooh - I like coffee a lot. I love movies, and I learned my English only from movies. I'm a HUGE fan of Marvel, horror movies, and musicals are probably my least favorite genre (but I will watch it with you). There's probably a ton of things I want to write, but if you like it so far, let's talk and get to know each other more. I'd prefer it if you're 22-30, but not a huge deal-breaker. 😁
Good luck to all. Here's me! https://imgur.com/a/CQyb4Db

2020.11.05 02:54 TheRazorX The new Astroturfing shill talking points, and their counters.

So yeah, the new DNC Shill-farm talking points are out, and the shills are once again working overtime. Here are a few of them with my personal responses, feel free to take what you want. If they're going to copy and paste talking points, we can copy-paste responses (but please don't do it unless you agree with the argument, let's not turn into them). I've tried to use "Dem friendly" sources to back my arguments, so these fucks can't use the "Bad source" argument.

"This is all your fault, if you fucks had voted for Biden, this wouldn't be so close."

Recommended Response:
"FUCKING A IT IS, maybe you should run policies we care about next time, instead of appealing to republicans, which despite millions spent, Hillary still did better with".

"This is all Bernie's fault, the "Socialist" stigma stuck, and we lost Florida because it turned off Cubans.

Recommended Response:
Or, you lost Florida because Florida isn't actually as "purple" as you pretend it is, and pretending that Bernie was going to lose it as justification on why he couldn't be the nominee, was just a smoke screen since effectively any Dem would've lost it. Honestly, it's highly likely this is the only way FL will ever "go Blue"
Biden won FL in the primary based on the heavily conservative white elderly vote. A vote that everyone knew based on polling data, was always skewed to Trump. A vote that as expected, Biden lost.. It's the Youth that overwhelmingly went to Bernie in the primary, that even kept Biden in the race, even though he regularly shit on them.. If not for "Bernie's people", Biden would've lost Florida in a landslide.
It seems like Bernie's people helped him win multiple places. Imagine that...
Furthermore Biden lost Florida while gaining 750k more votes than HRC did AND won the Latino vote in the state. If the "socialist stigma" is what caused his loss, then why did Biden outperform Hillary in terms of raw votes? And why would he STILL have lost had he kept up with HRC's Latino Margins?
And more importantly, why did Florida embrace leftist policies that Biden did not? Why did Florida Dems not embrace "leftist" policies that passed with ease?
In Miami-Dade which Centrists are crying about and saying it's "Bernie's fault Biden Lost it", literally elected Daniella Levine Cava for Country Mayor (the 1st female btw). Cava, is a non-hispanic woman that is known as a "Water warrior" because of her environment crusades, Founded the "Catalyst Miami" group that helps raise people out of poverty, who ran on (and stop me if this comes as a surprise); Climate change, supporting working families, affordable housing, public transit, supporting unions, Infrastructure, expanding services to the poor and elderly and gasp Criminal justice reform.
IMAGINE THAT?!
or how about that they elected leftist female Luisa Santos to the school board?
Maybe it isn't as conservative as you pretend it is.
Could it be that the majority of Latinos in the USA, had to flee from leftist countries destroyed by Neoliberal/Neocon policies, and we shouldn't assume that a minority of gluttonous class Latinos, pissed off that they lost their ill gotten inherited wealth, speak for the majority?
Maybe I dunno, hiring freaking Contras cheerleader Anna Navarro, who threatened an elected US official, for Latino outreach was a stupid idea?
Maybe I dunno, don't listen to the fucking over paid idiots that told you Bolivians would welcome a RW coup?
And even more amusingly is that "Bernie's people" (those "Young idiots" as you like to call them) literally gave Biden the win in Wisconsin as well.
And to make it even clearer; in 2008 Obama who was labelled a Kenyan Socialist Muslim and ran as an unapologetic progressive against the "respected and beloved" John McCain, won;
  • Wisconsin by 400K votes

Meanwhile Biden running against "The worst president in history" is barely squeaking out wins, even with record turn out.

AND/OR

No, it's because you're saboteurs. Harry S Truman in his address at the National Convention Banquet of the Americans for Democratic Action May 17, 1952 said;
We are getting a lot of suggestions to the effect that we ought to water down our platform and abandon parts of our program. These, my friends, are Trojan horse suggestions. I have been in politics for over 30 years, and I know what I am talking about, and I believe I know something about the business. One thing I am sure of: never, never throw away a winning program. This is so elementary that I suspect the people handing out this advice are not really well-wishers of the Democratic Party.
Since you're one step away from this, I'd rather listen to Truman. Especially considering there's absolutely no doubt that progressive policies are overwhelmingly popular, and your watered down policies are not

"It's because America is still a racist, bigoted place!!"

Or is it because like we've been preaching for decades, Americans actually care about policy over platitudes?
During a record turnout election;
If it's all about Racism, then why did Trump make significant gains among POCs?
If it was about bigotry, why did Trump DOUBLE his LGBT support from 2016?
In fact, why did Trump literally do better with Every single race except White Men when compared to 2016?
In fact, why did Trump just win the highest share of non-white support of any Republican in 60 years?!?!?!.

"It's because POC men like Trump's toxic masculinity!!"

Well, then why did Biden's Machismo not help him then??
Furthermore, let's assume this is correct. We knew from January that voters didn't consider "Race relations", "LGBT", or "Abortion" or even "Immigration" as highly as they do Healthcare, gun policy, Education, the Economy and even Terrorism and national security.
So exactly why didn't Biden do more to capture said "Toxic masculinity" vote? It wouldn't have been hard, he'd just have had to focus on Healthcare, Terrorism and national security, Gun policy, and Education in that order.
This was even further confirmed in October, although Race relations and Covid response jumped up a bit.
Furthermore Karen, can you stop it with the soft racism already? Next you'll be saying those men are all misogynists and other RW dog whistles. I mean, it's not your first time, and it's not like one of your lot haven't already advocated for collective punishment of POCs. (even though they did in fact end up voting for your zombie.)

"It's because America is just a conservative country, that's the truth of it"

No it Really is not, in fact, it only "Became conservative" when the party lost its mind after Reagan and the only choices available became Right Wing, or further Right Wing. We haven't had a LW choice in decades.
Clinton really only won because of Ross Perot, and yet his win was used as irrevocable proof of "Americans being conservative", yet somehow Obama's legendary 2008 wasn't at all an indication of "Americans being Leftists".

"Bernie would've hurt us down ballot!!"

Oh? Even if appealing to republicans has actually helped Biden, It's obvious it hurt the down ballot. As it stands, Dems have failed to gain the senate (Of the 35 Senate seats up for grabs, 23 were Republican-held and 12 were Democrat) and only freaking won ONE seat. ONE. AND they LOST seats in the house., in fact, Dems have literally lost down ballot districts that Biden DID win, because assuming that republicans that DO hate Trump will fall in love with Democrats is utter stupidity and absolutely naive.
Furthermore, even with record breaking fundraising, and high turn out, they still failed.
Democrat Jaime Harrison, a former top aide to longtime South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn and a one-time South Carolina Democratic Party chair, lost to Lindsey Graham 54.72% to 43.88% with DOUBLE the turn out of 2014, at a difference of 264,936 votes, while in 2014 Brad Hutto lost to Graham at 54.27% to 38.78%, at a difference of 192,008 votes.
The core difference?
Hutto spent $522,454 compared to Graham's $11,464,087 in 2014
In 2020? Harrison spent $104,092,829 to Graham's $60,015,745 , and still lost at a roughly close margin (72,928 difference between 2014 and 2020).
And that's not the only example;
In Maine, with Ranked choice voting (so no spoiler bullshit), Sara Gideon who raised $68,577,474 and spent $47,908,382, Lost heavily to fucking Susan Collins who raised $26,511,555 and spent $23,010,418
Mind you, this is the same Maine that go RCV passed, and passed two ballot measures in July, one that " Authorizes $15 million in bonds for high-speed internet infrastructure" and the other that "Authorizes $105 million in bonds for transportation infrastructure projects" and Maine is a fucking 47% Democrat state.
And those are just some of the higher profile ones. In Florida, Dems lost five state house seats.
They won the Michigan legislature, but were blown out in Texas. Texas results were pretty sad actually
In fact, even in the House, Again despite record fundraising, GOP members managed to hold onto seats in districts that Trump LOST, while so far, Dems haven't been able to flip a SINGLE republican seat in the House, while losing 20 of their most vulnerable.

Not. A. Single. One.

(And no, guaranteed pickups created by court-ordered redistricting in North Carolina do not count as "flipping a seat")
So remember that centrist argument about how "Progressives can't flip republican seats"? Well apparently neither can "Establishment dems" even with a ton of $$$$$.
And that's not even getting into other super heavily funded races like Amy McGrath, where McGrath raised $88,098,919 and spent $73,353,803, while McConnell raised $55,500,677 and spent $43,947,731..
McGrath, who won the primary, was still utterly bloodied by Charles Booker who was operating with a fraction of her resources. She literally outspent her opponents combined through June by a margin of nearly 30-1. In fact she touted her fundraising as a reason why she could beat McConnnell.
She ended up beating Booker 45.4% to 42.6% in the primary, at a difference of 15,149 votes.
And pissed away 44 million to lose to McConnell's 58.2% to 37.8% a difference of 429,020 votes.
All in all, Dem Senate fundraising was by all accounts record-breaking, with high amounts of small dollar donations, and they still did poorly. And by record breaking I mean absurdly so
And yes of course Super PACS are a thing, and candidate spending isn't everything, but let's not pretend that Dems under the stewardship of Biden, were shy about soliciting corporate money.
Meanwhile a non-binary veiled female black Muslim won a seat in Oklahoma's legislature (a 1st)., Mauree who was first endorsed by Illhan Omar (And tbf, later on Warren and Buttigieg endorsed her as well), unapologetically ran her campaign on... Criminal justice reform, a higher minimum wage, and healthcare. She didn't run on "Not Trump"
And DSA backed candidates have won 85% of their races, and the majority of Ballot initiatives they championed passed. Imagine that.
Yet so far, every Democrat that has lost, has been a "conservative" or "Moderate" democrat. (thanks for the heads up gjohnsit)
But Sara McBride, Mark Kelly, and Hickenlooper winning is such a great win, right?
I mean honestly, why would anyone expect otherwise from the man that was part of the Administration that lost 1000s of legislative seats? They got wiped out then, and this year in a census year, they got wiped out down-ballot. That's an absolute fucking disaster.
[Of course they'll probably follow it up with how down ballot results would be worse, which in that case just show them the Fox news exit polls again or just smack them with a trout.]

"Biden got more votes than anyone, that proves we're right!!!"

No, it just proves scaring people works. In poll after poll, 60-80% of Biden supporters reported that they're voting AGAINST Trump rather than FOR Biden, something that has remained consistent since he "won" the primary.
And this is also something I'd honestly be surprised if you even try to argue, because Biden's entire campaign, Jill Biden, VBNMW, Even Biden himself......etc have all been laser focused on defeating Trump, with everything else being considered secondary.
In other words, you made this case, and now you're trying to discredit your own case yourselves.
You can't have it both ways.
I'll add more as I get them/You correct me, and I'll likely continue to edit this to add links and such.
Oh and Biden Shills? Please please PLEASE try to counter my arguments, Either you convince me, or (more likely) I make my arguments stronger, either way is a win imo.

2020.11.03 05:00 screwbuharvard2 Veterans Marathon at Ghost Town Rail Trail

Race Info
Trading card
Background
Once Boston 2020 got postponed and then went virtual, I knew I would want to find a small fall marathon to sign up for and to keep me motivated for training. After the Moose League 5k, I checked out what was available, and this looked like the best combination of Covid-19 safety, favorable course, and timing for a fall training cycle. The course was out and back, with about 400 ft. of gradual elevation gain to the halfway point, and the second half all downhill. I didn't realize it until after signing up, but the course was on an unpaved dirt/crushed gravel trail. Not sure if I would have made a different choice if I had known this.
Training
I had 9 weeks from the Moose League 5k to the marathon. Per Coach Evan of Simple Athletics, my weekly plan consisted of workouts on Wednesdays, long runs with some quality on Sundays, strides on Tuesdays and Fridays, and recovery days with shorter mileage on the other three days.
I averaged about 77 mpw over the 7 weeks before a two week taper, with a peak of 83 miles. Taking the recovery days very easy on pace and mileage (typically 6 to 7 miles at 8 to 9 min/mile) kept me feeling fresh and ready to go hard on the workouts and long runs, and I felt pretty good the entire cycle.
Key workouts: 3x10 min at marathon pace, progressing to half marathon pace; 8x3 min at 10k pace progressing to 5k pace, and 15x1 min at 5k to 3k pace. Long runs were generally progressive, finishing at or above marathon effort, typically 20 to 22 miles. As the weather got cooler during the fall, the workouts and long runs got better and better, and I was really happy with the improvement over the cycle.
I did several workouts and long runs on local rail trails with a similar dirt/crushed gravel surface as the race course, to get used to the surface. I could tell that it was slower than asphalt, but it was difficult to quantify how much slower. I hoped that the extra energy return from switching from my standard shoes (Hoka Clifton and Nike Zoom Fly) to race shoes (Nike Next %) would balance out the energy loss of the soft-surface race course.
Race Planning
Pre-Race
I had a salt pill every 2 hours the day before the race because I could sense I was not retaining fluids well for most of the week and I wanted to hydrate as much as possible. Drove 8 hours from Boston to the race location on Saturday, packet pickup was a literal drive-thru, and I did a short shakeout on the course. Back to the hotel, reheated leftover rice/stirfy for dinner. Sleep was lousy, as usual the night before a marathon. Went to bed at 9:30, woke up at 11:30, 12:45, and 2 AM. Fortunately the daylight savings time change gave me an extra hour, and I woke up before the alarm, and grabbed some coffee and cereal from the hotel lobby. Drove to the race, took a Gu 1 hour before the start, warmed up for 1 mile, and took another Gu 5 minutes before the start. Weather was about 50 deg F, light wind from the west, and light rain. I wore Nike Next %, shorts, singlet, and gloves.
Race
Miles 1 to 5: The leader took off and another runner behind us told us that the leader was planning to run 5:50 pace, or between 2:33 and 2:34 for the full marathon. Pacer imnotwadegreeley and I fell into second and third, basically alone except for a guy trailing us who was hoping for 2:50. I felt great, maybe too great - had trouble slowing down to the target power of 290 to 292. Started at 300 watts, then ran at 294 to 297 watts. The water stops were at miles 2, 4, 6.5, 9, 12.5, and at the same locations on the return trip. We had been told they would have bottled water and gatorade, but they actually had open cups. This was frustrating for me because it would have been much easier to drink from bottles, and I might have carried a handheld if I had known about the cups.
Miles 6 to 12: Pacer and I chatted and enjoyed the scenery, clicking off miles within the target range. I didn't feel like I was working too hard, the scenery was gorgeous, and we were having fun. We were clicking off miles at about 297 to 300 watts, at the upper end of the target range. The 2:50 guy gradually fell behind. At mile 12.5, the leader passed us going the opposite direction (meaning he was at about mile 13.7ish), and imnotwadegreeley bid me goodbye, and ran ahead. I took a Gu at mile 6.5 and mile 12.5.
Miles 13 to 20: I cruised solo to the turnaround and started the downhill. The outbound runners were excellently supportive, but I was not able to offer more than a nod and smile. I was starting to work hard. A similar effort as the previous section was resulting in a slightly lower power, and my last mile at 300 watts was mile 14, my fastest of the race at 6:07. With the downhill, however, I was still running faster than the previous section, and still looking forward to hammering the final 10k. I had a gu at mile 17. Mile 19.5 was the turnaround for the half marathon course, which gave me runners to chase.
Miles 21 to finish: They say mile 20 is the halfway point. And I reached it without much left. I asked my legs for more, and they laughed at me. First I couldn't keep my power above 290 watts. And then I couldn't keep my power above 280 watts. And then 270, as we approached a death march to "easy" pace. Only now it felt absolutely miserable and I caught myself bargaining. The last 6 miles were the most downhill of the race, wouldn't that keep me going at a decent pace? Yeah right. My legs started seriously cramping and aching at mile 22, and I took a gel, but every time I asked them for more, they simply did not listen. I could feel my form deteriorating, and my feet hitting the ground harder, almost flopping on the ground like swim fins. Needless to say my feet and ankles were getting sore too. Passing slower half marathoners was almost embarrassing, as my form resembled a zombie coal miner escaped from the rusted train cars abandoned along the trail, shambling forth to haunt my eternal soul as punishment for going out too hard. At the final turn to the finish, I looked over my shoulder and saw no humans chasing, and I looked ahead and saw the clock reading 2:47. I was the monster, and had laid waste to my own dreams, but I still could still escape with a PR. I flopped my dumb, lifeless legs as hard as I could and crossed the line in a daze at 2:48:37. Third overall. A PR by 1:41. And the sweetness of no longer running. The last painful steps.
Post-race
I got my third place plaque and medal, and posed for a photo with the race director. I chatted with imnotwadegreeley, he had absolutely crushed the second half of the race in 1:10, passing the leader at mile 25 and breaking his heart on the way to victory. Absolutely insane running. A pretty good looking team
I got in the car and drove the 5 minutes back to the hotel, it was incredibly painful to even hold my legs in a driving position. Thankfully, a shower, hot bath, and 30 minutes lying on the bed rejuvenated me, and I drove the 8 hours back home with no problem, though I did buy a rest stop Mountain Dew and considered stopping at Taco Bell before deciding I had punished my body enough for one day and got Chipotle instead.

2020.11.03 04:18 clairy_roubaix Virtual NYC marathon -- first time!

Ran my first marathon on Sunday. It went well in the sense that I finished, but badly in that I ran too fast in the middle sections and blew up around mile 19. I thought I'd write a race report about it:

Race Information

Goals

Goal Description Completed?
A Finish Yes
B Sub 4 No
C Negative split Oh my goodness, no

Training

In a sense I started training for this in the spring, when I thought I'd have a trail running season and that there would be a 50K in it at some point, but like everyone else my goals for the year changed up a lot. After a bunch of the trail season got postponed or cancelled, I changed my target race to the Philadelphia marathon instead. Then Philly got cancelled, so I diverted to the virtual NYC after I saw the badge for it on Strava.
I signed up for the basic NYRR training plan where you just get the Zoom webinars on Tuesdays. I decided to do the intermediate plan instead of the beginner plan even though this was my first crack at 26.2 miles, because I had built up a pretty big base earlier in the spring from doing my own personal time trial of the Slate Run 25K and figured I'd just roll from one to the other.
My course was four 6.5 mile laps of the neighborhood, beginning and ending at my house. At the house I had a little "aid station" set up with all my gels, water, and bananas.
My longest run of the training cycle was three laps of that course, which I did in about 3:02 (five minutes of that being a bathroom break that ran longer than I thought it would, the bathroom being inside the house and all). From that I got my misplaced optimism that I could approach 4:00 on race day. Other than that my long runs were on gravel, hilly courses in the state forest south of town (along the Tussey Mountainback course, mostly, if y'all know the area). So while my marathon course had hills, they were nothing compared to what I'd been training on.

Pre-race

Woke up at 6:15 for an 8:00 race start. Drank a cup of coffee and a little less than a pint of water in the morning. Ate a bagel and a banana. Did my usual pre-race stretching and warm-up.

Race

Started right at 8:00. The weather here was cold, cloudy, and windy all morning -- started at 42 degrees and maxed out at maybe 46 or 47 by the time I finished. There was a pretty stiff west wind that got stronger as the morning went along, which was a headwind on the uphill parts and a tailwind on the downhills. My rough plan was to do the first lap at my usual long-run pace (in training that hovered around 9:45-10:00/mile depending on how well I'd been sleeping and fueling lately), then speed up gradually depending on how I was feeling; this worked well in my practice run, to where my third lap was at or below 9:00 splits.
The laps were long enough that I made sure I had two gels with me when I stopped back at my little aid station after each one. I didn't bring water on the first lap but I had a handheld bottle for the others. I had additional bananas out but didn't take any until after I was finished running.
My first lap was unremarkable, though faster than I thought it would be (I figured 1:05; it was more like 1:01:30). Despite this I picked up the pace a little bit on the second lap, as planned. It started raining here, around mile 12, and continued off and on the rest of the race. The third lap is where I began to run into problems. Around mile 17, there was a left turn into a neighborhood that I'd been using as kind of a rough checkpoint. I got there a couple minutes after I thought I would on the third lap. "Hmm," I remember thinking, "four hours might be out of the question now." Two miles later I took another left turn into the uphill, headwind part of the lap, and promptly hit the wall pretty hard!
I think it was just my legs giving out from running the first 2.75 laps faster than I should have. I don't think my heart rate was ever out of zone 2 and I never felt winded at any point, which was the most frustrating part of all this -- in terms of fitness I felt great, my legs just didn't want to cooperate. I ended up walking a lot of the fourth lap, which the split times will show, though I did dig pretty deep on the last mile or so and found a sub-12:00 mile in there somehow.

Splits

(asterisks are where I stopped at the "aid station" so the times drop; also I started Strava about a minute before I started running, so my first mile was probably closer to 9:05)

Post-race

Staggered across the finish line, laid flat on my back for a couple of minutes and did a little double fist-pump to celebrate actually finishing this damn thing. I'm sure the neighbors thought I was nuts. Went inside, stretched and tried to massage as much soreness out of my calves and hamstrings as I could, and ate a giant bowl of black beans and rice that I saved for post-race. Ate nearly an entire pizza for dinner. Now it's 30+ hours later and I can just about walk the dog down to the park and back as long as he doesn't pull on the leash too much.

Lessons learned

  1. Run slower -- This came up in a bunch of the training webinars and always I thought "oh yeah, running slower is easy." But I think even in a virtual marathon where no one else is around, the Occasion caused me to run a faster pace than I maybe would have if I knew it was an average long run. I think at this distance I actually do need to monitor what my pace is with my phone or a watch, in a way that I never would in a 10K or even a half, so I don't push too hard too early.
  2. Run shorter laps -- In a real race I have to think the aid stations would be closer together. I could have simulated that better, so that I didn't have to carry so much stuff and constantly be thinking about whether I had enough gels or water for the next 40 minutes (I ran this completely solo). Partly this was because I couldn't find a 4-ish mile lap that I liked so I only have myself to blame.
  3. Set reasonable goals -- I based my sub-4:00 target on my 3:02 3/4 marathon practice run from three weeks ago, and on my 1:57 half-marathon PB on a much hillier course than this one was. That was too ambitious for a first time, as it turns out! If I do this again, maybe I target 10:00/mi splits for the first six or seven miles and see how I feel after that. Even targeting 9:45/mi yesterday would have been an improvement; I might have still hit the wall, but maybe it would have happened three or four miles later than it did?
  4. Don't ever do a virtual marathon again -- It's lonely out there, y'all. Plus I have to carry all my own stuff.
But I did it! Now I'm taking a week off and then either getting on the trainer and switching back to cycling, or maybe training for a New Year's Eve 5K time trial.

Training

Well, let me start by getting this out of the way: this year has been weird, unusual, and at times, stressful. Especially with the COVID-19 pandemic. After a spring training cycle that ended with me setting new PRs in the 10 mile and half marathon distances (via solo time trials), I started my marathon training cycle in June, with the hope that the major fall marathons (Chicago and NYC) were going to be held. Of course, they cancelled their events weeks later (and within weeks of each other) because the COVID situation was still left uncontrolled, leaving me without any goal race to aim for. With the uncertainty still lingering in the air, I opted to continue my training regimen, and start looking around for smaller races nearby later. Specifically, races that were small enough where they could get the necessary approvals to be held and were not too high profile where it would attract unnecessary attention.
My training consisted of mostly easy/aerobic running, some speed and hill workouts thrown in, along with the regularly scheduled long runs. But because I was training in the Northeast during the summer, it was brutally hot and humid, and training was miserable at times. Using a modified Pfitz 18/70 plan (basically without the hard workouts that might have overcooked me), I began at 50-55 miles per week, and eventually peaked at 70 miles per week.
Over the late summer, I started using marathon aggregation websites to look around for small races nearby, or within reasonable traveling distance, that were not cancelled at the time and still had space to accommodate additional participants. Some early leads fizzled out as the organizers opted to cancel their races and/or go virtual due to the uncertain COVID situation. Another race I was looking at decided to restrict participants to those who only resided in New England states, per a state order. Eventually, it came down to me seriously considering two races – Ocean State Rhode Races (OSRR) and the Harrisburg Marathon – and began to keep a very close eye on the developments from the organizers of those races. I noticed that the Ocean State Rhode Races organizers had a free waitlist enabled, the race was in late October (coinciding with the TCS NYC Virtual Marathon), and COVID cases wasn’t expected to spike to concerning levels at that time; with that in mind, I put my name into the waitlist.
About four weeks out, OSRR organizers reported that they got state-level approval for their event (a huge development), and they were working on getting town-level approval for all the towns that were along the course. One by one, town-level approvals started coming through, and the event appeared to be on track to get the full green light by the following week (three weeks out). With that promising positive trend, I decided to schedule my final 20 mile long run on that same weekend so that I could start my three week taper when registration opened up the following week. Sure enough, once the final town level approval was obtained the following week, they began to start pulling people from the waitlists. I immediately jumped on registration once I was pulled off the waitlist and signed up without any further delay. What seemed like a distant dream a few months ago became reality; I now had an actual, in-person marathon to focus on. It was time to prepare and bring my game day face to the race.

Pre-Race

Traveled over to Rhode Island via train and car early on Saturday morning, arriving at Narragansett later in the morning. After dropping off my overnight bags at the hotel, I walked around the beach area for a while, then stopped by the bib pickup area at the beach to pick up my bib. After eating lunch and checking into my hotel room, I did an easy shakeout jog along the first few miles of the marathon route to loosen my legs and get a feel of the first few miles of the course. Spent the rest of the afternoon chilling, sparing my legs from walking around too much.
I went to a nearby restaurant in the evening for the customary carb-heavy pre-marathon dinner. After dinner, I went back to my hotel room, where I went and did my usual pre-race preparation and routine. Laid out my singlet, shorts, arm warmers, my new pair of Next%, socks, gels and gloves, and pinned the bib onto my singlet. Took a warm Epsom salt bath to loosen my muscles and calm my nerves. I remembered seeing u/dozaster mentioned in artc that he drank a full serving of Maurten 320 the night before the race and it helped him greatly. I was like heck, this was worth a try; I wasn’t planning to carry a bottle during the race, yet I wanted to make sure I was sufficiently fueled up for at least the first half of the race, even I have to find myself storing it in my body like a bear preparing for hibernation. So I found myself drinking a serving of Maurten 320 while watching the World Series on TV before heading to bed. (Side note: And I found out the morning after the Dodgers choked really hard down the stretch. Like c’mon? Really? But again, that doesn’t surprise me). Got a good 7 hour sleep that night, and felt very well rested that night.
Woke up at 5:30 AM and started to get myself ready for the race. Had a quick breakfast consisting of two granola bars and some water to go along with it. I checked the temperatures for that morning, and while it was cold (temperatures were in the high 40s at the start), I realized this was perfect running temperatures and that I was going to be in perfect place once I was warmed up. Thus, no need for throwaway clothes. Plus, the start line was about half a mile from the hotel itself, and it was an easy 10 minute jog over. Since the race asked us to show up about 10-15 minutes before our scheduled start time, I wasn’t going to be sitting around in the cold for long prior to starting the race. Once I got dressed, I headed over to the hotel lobby where I got myself a bit of coffee to wake myself up and to stay warm for the time being. About 20 minutes before the race started, I took a gel, washed it down with water, then headed out to make the 10 minute jog over to the start line.
Once I reached the start area, I saw that other marathoners were converging on the area at the same time, and I noticed that the announcer was starting to ask participants to line up at the start corral. After a few quick strides in the parking lot, I went over to the starting corral and positioned myself up front. I quickly greeted a few runners near me and we started asking each other what our race goals were. It was immediately clear to me that everyone wanted to respectfully run their own races and not want to go out too fast and spend unnecessary effort jockeying for positions up front at the beginning. I also quickly realized there was a much deeper field than usual that showed up this year; there were quite a few sub-2:40 men, with a good number of sub-2:55 men in the mix as well. This was not surprising to me in the first place; with all the high-profile races were cancelled due to the pandemic, many of these displaced runners needed to find a race satisfy their racing itch, just like me, and it was almost a guarantee that a few of these fast runners were going to show up to any legitimate race that is able to be held in a COVID environment once they hear about it. With the realization that I was facing a very competitive field and that an age group placement was out of reach (unless something catastrophic were to happen), I decided to focus on running my own race, race smart, and focus on my own goal: running a 3:10 marathon.
After the usual pre-race announcements and the singing of the National Anthem, it was time for us to start the race. With the “on your mark, get set….” from the race announcer, we were off and running down the road in no time to kick off the race.

Race

Mile 1 to 7

I started off the first mile a bit too hot, going along with the faster runners up front. I quickly realized this was a bad idea and I certainly did not want to end my race early. So, I consciously backed off and let other faster runners go ahead of me, while I worked on slowing my pace down to my goal pace of 7:15 per mile.
My immediate concern in the beginning was that my HR was spiking to levels that would be unsustainable over the long run. Because of that, I focused on making sure I was being relaxed as much as possible while staying close to goal pace as much as possible in efforts to keep my heart rate down. There were a good number of rolling hills present during the first seven miles, and so I made sure to maintain consistent effort while going up and down the hills. I was in visual contact with a small group of runners – a few males and a few fast females – and so I tried to make sure I didn’t fall too behind from that group. Took some water at mile 4, and decided to hold off taking a gel until the mile 8 aid station, as I felt good nutrition-wise at that time.
Although, I have to say that I enjoyed the views while going through the Bonnet Shores neighborhood, and that was definitely the highlight for me for this portion of the race.
Hit the first 7 miles with 7:02, 7:16, 7:35, 7:04, 7:17, 7:15, and 7:20 mile splits.

Mile 7.1 to 13.1

After going through the Bonnett Shores neighborhood, I continued north on Boston Neck Road. After we passed the half marathon split off point, we started to run past the early bird marathoners whom started an hour earlier than we did, and we continued to encounter groups of these early bird marathoners throughout this stretch. There was a slight uphill climb between miles 9.4 and 10.4, but it did not bother me too much and I was able to navigate it without any issues.
The stretch between miles 10 and the half marathon point was incredibly beautiful. The roads here were lined with trees on both ends, and you could see that there was some fall foliage left on these trees (peak fall foliage occurred a week before). It was quite a beautiful sight to see.
By this time, my heart rate had dropped and stabilized to levels where I could maintain my current pace without completely bonking out later down the stretch. Took a gel with water at the mile 8 aid station; at that point, I burned through a good portion of my glycogen stores and felt this was a good time to start taking some additional nutrition. By the time I approached the halfway point, the lead male runners started coming through in the opposite direction, making their way south to the start/finish area.
Mile 8 through 13 splits were as follows: 7:28, 7:01, 7:16, 6:59, 7:17, 7:13. Hit the halfway point in 1:35:22. So far, so good.

Mile 13.1 to Mile 20

The halfway point between mile 13 and 16 consisted of an out-and-back loop through a residential neighborhood. Again, it was very quiet for the most part, aside from a couple of cheer groups that popped up along the way. Took a quick look at my watch and while the predicted time on the Race Screen app was still fluctuating all over the place, there was one metric that remained constant: the average mile per pace. And it was consistently showing 7:15 mile per pace. This was a good sign that I was on the right track to meet my goal finishing time; I focused on maintaining my current pace with consistent efforts. There was a small group of guys I was running with between mile 8 and 16, but by mile 16 I had completely dropped them as well. Took some water at the aid station after mile 14 and took some additional water plus a gel at the aid station right after mile 16, and braced myself for the uphill climb between mile 17 and 19. By this time, the rest of the marathoners were making their way northward, and I found myself blasting past them in the opposite direction.
Mile 17 and 19 was arguably the toughest part of the course, with rolling hills between miles 17 and 18, and a significant uphill climb of 160 feet between miles 18 and 19. While I navigated miles 17 and 18 without any issues (though at a slightly slower pace), miles 18 and 19 were somewhat difficult. While I slowed my pace by a minute per mile, it was a never-ending grind and I had to put much more effort into this segment compared to the effort that I had put in running the first 18 miles of the race. My lungs and legs felt like they were burning up, and I wanted this to end.
Once I crested the hill at mile 19, I made a quick porta potty stop at the nearby aid station, followed by a quick sip of water. After a quick breather, I resumed running and was back on my way.
Mile splits between miles 14 and 20 were as follows: 7:08, 7:11, 7:07:, 7:30, 7:27, 7:53, 7:10

Mile 20 to 26

There was this female runner that was I was running with since mile 8; while she was ahead of me most of the time (but within visual sight), I finally caught up to her by around mile 20. Once I passed mile 20, I had a big decision to make; do I stay on my current pace, or do I pick it up and run fast during the last 10K? I quickly checked in with myself to see if I was OK with picking things up a notch, and I realized that I was still in good shape (no fatigue), didn’t show any signs of bonking, and still had enough left in the tank for a fast finish. My watch still showed that I was on 7:15/mi pace, and my dream of a 3:10 finish was very much alive. With that, I did not want to lose this opportunity; it was go time for me. I picked up the pace, dropped the female runner, and began grinding out the last 10K on my own, at a pace slightly faster than my goal marathon time. I took full advantage of the elevation drops between miles 20 and 22 to throw down mile splits of 6:53 and 6:45, respectively, and put in more of a gap between me and other runners who were right behind me. This put me in no man’s land for at least a mile or so once more.
Shortly before mile 22, I made a right turn and merged onto the same route that the half marathoners were running on; this delighted me because now I was not completely alone and would have company for the last 4 miles of the race. With that, I continued with my fast pace, made sure I was 6 feet apart from the half marathoners, and blazed past them like a hot knife through butter. Some of them even cheered me on as I ran past them. Not going to lie, I felt like a rock star at that time, even though I felt bad for running past them and leaving them in the dust like that. But I had a goal to meet, I was not going to relent, and I had to remain focused. A quick check of my watch around mile 23 indicated that my average mile pace dropped down to 7:14 per mile, and I was on track to finish in the 3:10 range.
By mile 24, I knew that I almost had this marathon in the bag, and I was on pace to set a massive PR. But, before I could bring it home and celebrate, there was this hill between mile 24 and mile 25 I had to climb. Not as bad as the hill between mile 18 and 19, but it was an annoying obstacle between me and the finish. So, I braced myself and grinded it out while doing my best to maintain a pace close to my goal pace of 7:15 per mile. After hitting the mile 25 mark, I knew the finish line was not far away, that I was almost done, and I wanted to finish up strong. Picked up the pace once more, grinded out another small hill that was in the way, and held on for dear life.
As I approached mile 26, I noticed the finish line in the distance, and that was enough motivation for me to further pick up the pace book it to the finish. Checked my watch one more time, and the Race Screen App told me I was on track to finish in 3:10:06. Oh hell no, I thought to myself, I have a good shot at finishing under 3:10, I made it this far, and I am not going to throw away this opportunity. I made a left hand turn and entered the finishing chute to book it all the way to the finish, and got so excited that the announcer had to remind me to pull up my mask on the way in (which I did!). I saw the race clock at about 150 meters to go, and it was ticking away at around 3:09:30, and that is when I knew that a sub-3:10 finish was possible. Ran the final meters while keeping a close eye on the race clock to make sure I wasn’t slowing down while approaching the finish. Crossed the finish line with my arms up when the race clock ticked past 3:09:56. With that, it was over. A stretch marathon goal that I thought was not possible in to reach in the possible became reality.
Mile splits between mile 21 and 26 were as follows: 6:53, 6:46, 7:01, 7:02, 7:25, 6:58. Final 0.2 was ran in 6:43. Ran the second half in 1:34:32, or 50 seconds faster than my first half.
Final official finishing time: 3:09:54. Good for 17th overall. And a 21 minute marathon PR.

Post-Race

After crossing the finish line, I stopped my watch and did a quick check on my body to make sure that I wasn’t experiencing any physical difficulties (I was still functional and alert). Grabbed my post-finish snacks and drinks on my way out of the finishing chute, and checked my official finishing time on my phone; that was when I learned that I finished under 3:10, which was the best possible outcome for me. Hung around for a bit to watch other runners finish their own races, and chatted with other runners that were in the finish area. After about an hour, I slowly walked back to my hotel for a much-needed hot shower and a change of clothes, checked out of my hotel room, and headed over to a nearby restaurant for a celebratory lunch. Stopped by a brewery next to the train station that afternoon for a quick celebratory drink before taking the Northeast Regional back to NYC.
All in all, this race went as perfectly as you could imagine. Because of the rolling hills that were prevalent in the course, I was concerned that I was going to fry myself for going too hard on the hills, especially during the second half of the race when bad decisions during the first half come back to bite many people’s asses. Thus, I decided to start conservatively and made sure I was holding myself together during the first half without overcooking myself, and make a break for it for the second half if I had enough left in the tank. This proved to be an excellent decision on my part. Second, I was expecting to be in no man’s land for most parts of the race because of my expected finishing time; indeed, I was in no man’s land for some stretches of the race, but surprisingly I had company near or ahead of me for most parts of the race; I made sure I was keeping those runners within line of sight with consistent effort, not pacing myself faster than I was comfortable with at the time. Third, taking the Maurten 320 the night before helped me a lot in terms of fueling as I was able to tap into it during the first half of the race, when I was getting my rhythm established. Finally, the weather was perfect for running; the temperatures at the start were in the high 40s and did not creep up beyond the low 50s, making conditions ideal for racing. The only obstacle I faced was that there were 11 mph winds from the north, which made the first half a bit challenging. I opted to hold back during the first half so to not fight against the wind and crank it up during second half where the wind was basically a non-factor. Overall, I committed to a reasonable finishing time as my primary goal, stuck to and ran my own race throughout, and made sure I was well fueled and well rested beforehand. These were the ingredients that propelled me to a successful day on the course and helped me nab a huge marathon PR in the process.

2020.10.28 16:19 throwawayuscis14 Date of minor offense for N-400 application

Hi
I am applying for my N400 and by most of the posts I've seen here is that even if I received a minor ticket (speeding or whatever else, I should mention it)
About 10 or so years ago, I received a New York City Pink Summons ticket which is a minor offence (https://www.pinksummons.com/) At the time, I went to some office/court and paid a $50 fine.
Problem is that I don't remember what date this occurred on or even exactly what year this was since this was a long time ago. I don't have the old ticket anywhere and can't find any information this old on my back statements
I tried to look it up online on the nyc.gov website and even emailed customercare.nyc.gov to see if they could get me more information but they don't have anything with my information.
So first question is should I just put an approximate date (I think this happened in either 2010 or 2011)?
Also the only tickets I have received are this and one speeding ticket. so Under the Question
"Have you EVER committed, assisted in committing, or attempted to commit, a crime or offense for which you were NOT arrested? "
do i say "yes" or "no"
I will be putting a "yes" for the question
"Have you EVER been arrested, cited, or detained by any law enforcement officer (including any immigration official or any official of the U.S. armed forces) for any reason?"

Thanks so much

Light S3 Review

First Impressions
Hi Vanmoofers - my Light S3 finally arrived on Friday and I thought I’d share my first impressions.

Some Context:
The S3 is the only electric bike I’ve ever ridden. I own a carbon fiber road bike (Specialized Roubaix) that I’ve put a few thousand miles on.
I ordered the S3 back on May 16 with an original deliver date of August 16. Back in August support told me (after I pressed them) my bike was at a warehouse in New Jersey (I live in NYC) but was delayed due to “quality checks.” The bike would be delayed five more times, each due to “quality checks” no one could explain in any detail.
The bike finally shipped from across the country in Washington (state). The original bike in NJ must have had an issue forcing Vanmoof to ship a new bike. Shipping took about a week and the UPS tracking number didn’t get any progress updates until it was in NY. Once in NY it arrived the next day.

Cost
VanMoof S3 Light
Peace of Mind: Theft + Maintenance
Shipping costs
Total: $2,830.65

Assembly
The box came pretty beat up, but now I understand why - the box was huge. There is no way one person could lift it, less due to weight and more due to the box’s length. One end of the box was ripped open and hanging on only by a couple strands of tape. I didn’t bother keeping the box, I would not trust it to survive another round of shipping if I ever needed to use it again.
The bike itself was in perfect condition. No scratches, dents, or any of the other issues people have reported. It was securely packaged and wrapped in foam.
Putting the bike together was fairly straightforward and the instructions were easy to follow. The only part that gave me trouble was connecting the motor cable - and oh boy did it give me trouble. I spent about four hours putting the bike together (which I imagine is on the high side of what it took most people). One of those hours was spent just on getting the motor cable to sit where it is supposed to in the fork. Another of the hours was spent trying to fish the bike end of the motor cable out from inside the fork after I accidentally pushed it all the way inside.
Someone else on this sub had suggested turning the bike upside when connecting the motor cable and that helped to a degree. As did angling the cable on a slant when pushing it inside. But in the end it took a lot more force than I am typically comfortable exerting on mechanical parts to push it into place and force the cover on.
This brings me to my first complaint about the bike - some of the pieces should have been better designed to just snap together in an obvious way. Vanmoof made a big deal about using all custom parts and designs, but then have awkward things like the motor cable connection. I also got a basket and had to thread the cable for the light through plastic pieces - imo the cable should have been fixed and the connection should have snapped in place when you snap the pieces together. It’s like the bike was designed to be put together by a professional/at the store but instead was shipped directly to customers.
A couple other pieces needed to be realigned - the front wheel was a bit off and the back fender wasn’t centered. But this took only a couple minutes to loosen the screws and adjust. No big deal.
Overall, assembling was pretty easy but imo a poor experience for a bike that costs almost $3k all in. Considering how close I live to the store, I really think shipping to the store and having them assembly it should have been an option. It concerns me that other people have had screws come loose and I don’t fully trust myself to have done and checked everything properly.

The Ride
I’ve ridden about 15 miles so far. I’d give you exact stats but I just opened the app and it says, “Damn! There’s a problem loading your data.”
It’s fun. And it’s scary.
20 mph might not sound that fast but getting there almost instantly after takeoff makes it feel incredibly fast. It’s not unusual for me to hit 20 mph on my road bike but on the S3 I was going that speed in areas I would not have on the road bike. The acceleration is fantastic. I frequently found myself holding on for dear life on the first ride. On the second ride I felt more comfortable with it and I imagine you get used to it pretty quickly.
The big tires also absorb a lot. I still felt the bumps but I was confident riding in places I would never take my road bike. Cobble stone streets down in Dumbo, no problem. I found myself no longer paying as much attention to going over potholes and manhole covers where I would be extremely vigilant on the road bike. This makes sense given how massive these tires are.
My original plan was to not use a helmet and the bike was indeed very stable. However, for the second ride I opted for a helmet as I fear falling on this thing. I never felt like I was going to lose balance or anything like that, but I did worry about going over bumps too quickly - I worried at times that I might bounce off the bike. In reality that means I should have slowed down, but also made me want a helmet.
I found myself worrying what might happen if I ran into someone in a way I never worried on my road bike. I’ve done a full flip on my road bike, landing on my head, but I was 100% fine once the surprise wore off. The S3 is incredibly heavy. I would not want to have it land on me if I fell. And worse, I think that hitting a pedestrian while going at top speed would have a high likelihood of killing them. Have I ever actually hit a pedestrian, no - I try to bike as safely as reasonable. But I worry on this thing.
The boost button is a ton of fun. I found myself using it on almost every acceleration and holding it most of the way on bridges. Once I hit 20mph there was a noticeably sudden stop in acceleration but that’s fine. Boost is definitely one of the big highlights of this bike.
The electric shifter is just as bad as everyone says. It is a bit inaccurate (shifts at weird times), grinds constantly, and I found it failed to downshift if I braked into a stop without pedaling. However, while I consider it a negative, it isn’t something that would turn me off the bike. It’s just a nuisance, not a big deal.
Battery - I’m down to 50% after about 15 miles. But I was on level 4 the whole time and made heavy use of the boost button. I don’t think the battery will be a concern on a daily basis but definitely expect to charge it every night with my riding style.

Walking the Bike
The weight and size of the bike become really apparent as soon as you try to walk it. The bike is really heavy, large, and unwieldy. It dwarfs my road bike by a significant margin. It is much longer, a little bit taller, and (obviously) many times heavier. The wheels are also quite fat and large. I didn’t really think too much about this during my test ride but it’s now the biggest con for me by far. Just standing with the bike it feels like it is trying to fall down. Navigating doorways and elevators is a big pain. If you have to carry it up any amount of stairs, this is probably not the bike for you.

The Basket
I have a basket on the front. It’s pretty well made. The metal cage is excellent. The base is plastic and could be nicer, but plenty sturdy. The mount that connects it to the bike is pretty bad. It too is plastic and I would not trust it with any real weight. Carrying some light groceries, fine. But try to sit on it like I’ve seen people do with the Citi Bikes and it will snap right off. Obviously it isn’t designed for that kind of weight but it stands in stark contrast to how sturdy the rest of the bike is. I wouldn’t even want to carry a lock in it on a regular basis for fear of it bending over time. That said, I wanted it mainly to carry take out orders and for that it seems more than capable.

Overall Impression
As an ebike, the S3 is incredible. It’s well made (apart from a few plastic parts) and the design looks fantastic. I love the light blue color. The speed and acceleration are a ton of fun. If I were to buy a second ebike, I would stick with Vanmoof (maybe get an X3). I’m somewhat tall at 6’1” so the height of the bike is comfortable for me but its length and overall size are a bit large for my taste. Anyone shorter than 6’ will likely have a bit of trouble.
While the S3 is a great ebike, mostly it just made me miss my road bike. This is the only ebike I’ve ever ridden but I think ebikes may not be for me. I miss the nimbleness and lightness of my road bike. But more than that, I miss actually biking. I like putting in the effort and feeling it in my legs. Part of the purpose behind buying this was to not get sweaty on the bridges around NYC but I’m not convinced that is enough. I don’t know exactly why, but riding the S3 just didn’t feel as fun as when I’m on my road bike. This is definitely a personal thing as most of the reviews of ebikes I see online are glowing about how fun they are.

I’m probably going to return it
For the reason I just stated - I simply didn’t find it as fun as pedaling manually. I might get a steel framed road bike with some fenders to use as my city bike. Yes, I will get sweaty on the bridges. But I will try to force myself to slow down and not make everything a race all the time. I wouldn’t let this point discourage you from buying the S3 - if you want an ebike I think it is fantastic. Just maybe not for me.

TLDR
It’s a great ebike and I’d recommend it to anyone in the market. It arrived completely undamaged as far as I can tell so far. But I’m thinking of going back to a traditional, manual bike as I like having to work for it a bit.

2020.10.23 08:16 Killer_The_Cat BTWH Frequently Asked Questions

Gameplay
Q: When will the mod release?
A: We plan to release a demo set in the New England region first, before an initial release later. There are no firm release dates for either: we will announce them when we get closer to release. (If you would like to speed up this process, you should join the mod! :P)
Q: Is the rest of the world on the map?
A: The map only covers North America: Canada, the United States, Mexico, and portions of the Carribean and Central America.
Q: I noticed that Alaska and Hawaii aren’t on the map. Will they eventually be on the map?
A: In a later update, although that might not be on release.
Q: Will Canada/Mexico/the Rest of North America have content?
A: Yes, there are plans for the entire map to have content. This probably won’t happen in the initial release, however.
Q: Will there be a new tech tree?
A: Yes.
Q: Will this mod be more gameplay-focused (like Kaiserreich) or more narrative-focused (like TNO)?
A: This is primarily a narrative-based mod, perhaps even more so than TNO. However, that doesn’t mean we’re ignoring gameplay - we aim to design the story and gameplay in a way which compliment each other.
Q: How long does the mod last?
A: The mod starts on May 1st, 1969. It is planned to run until the mid-80s (provisionally, May 1st,1985.)
Lore
Q: Why is a civil war happening?
A: Check the initial Dev Diary. TLDR: A series of corrupt and reactionary presidents drive the civil rights movement underground, decentralizes the federal government, and lays the seeds for a military coup which destroys the foundation of American democracy.
Q: What is the Denver Government?
A: The Denver Government constitutes the remnants of the federal government that have retreated to their new base in Denver. It is one of the central factions in the mod.
Q: Where is (X historical figure) in the mod?
A: Wait and see, and make sure you’re watching the teasers on discord! Part of the fun of BTWH is seeing historical figures both obscure and renown within the context of a civil war.
Q: How do all these movements have so much support?
A: We use the 12x rule as a rough estimate- meaning that any radical organization has about twelve times their original number. The much more chaotic and violent political atmosphere of the BTWH timeline has led to a corresponding growth of support to militant left and right wing organizations. The average person is not necessarily more radical than our timeline - they are just more willing to accept violence as a means for social change.
Q: Why are the south and midwest different colours to the rest of the starting map?
A: They are part of the Governor’s Pact and Midwest Civil Defense Alliance, respectively, alliances designed to contain the uprisings facing their territories. Due to the immediate threat to the state governments, they are unable to act in complete accordance with the Denver Government. They still de-jure recognize their authority however.
Q: What are all of these red spots on the starting map?
A: These are the various revolutionary movements that exist at the start of the game, the:
A large variety of new organisations and revolts can show up dynamically later during the game, of course.
Q: What’s the difference between the new and old left?
A: The Old Left tends to be more skeptical of what is nowadays described as identity politics (feminism, black nationalism, gay rights, etc). Additionally, the New Left almost universally rejects reformism, tends to be skeptical towards the “United States” as an entity, and is highly devoted to the ideology of Mao Zedong and Jiang Qing.
Q: What’s the point of divergence (PoD) for this mod’s alternate history?
A: Hubert Humphrey is unable to deliver his renowned speech at the 1948 Democratic National Convention (in OTL), which leads to a split between southern and progressive factions within the party over civil rights. This results in a far stronger Progressive Party than in OTL, a loss for Truman to Dewey in the 1948 elections, and subsequent MacArthur-backed nuclear strikes on China and the DPRK in the Korean War.
Q: What is happening in Cuba?
A: During the Goldwater presidency (see Dev Diary I), a full-scale invasion of Cuba took place. Cuba starts under a US-aligned administration, but has an active insurgency.
Q: What is happening in St. Pierre and Miquelon? Will France have content?
A: At one point in development there was extensive content planned but the lore was judged to be too outlandish to incorporate - so unfortunately there is no French content.
Q: Who leads China in the mod?
A: Chairwoman Jiang Qing, the wife of Mao Zedong (who died in the atomic bombing of Beijing during the Korean War).
Q: Who leads the Soviet Union at start?
A: Nikita Khrushchev.
Q: Who leads the Denver Government at the start of the mod?
A: John W. McCormack, a Democratic politician who took over the presidency in the aftermath of McGovern’s resignation (see Dev Diary I).
Q: Who are the ‘Funny Sword People’ or ‘CSAL’?
A: The CSAL (The Covenant, the Sword, and the Arm of the Lord) are a Christian fundamentalist organisation that will feature in the mod.
Q: Are all the characters within the mod real people?
A: Yep! Every single person given a full name is a real person who lived within the time period. Some of them might be pretty obscure, however - there are quite a few leaders who don’t have wikipedia pages.
Team Structure
Q: Who is the lead dev? Who came up with this idea?
A: Laura (@anarchomastia on discord) is the lead dev of BTWH.
Q: Wait, is she that one-
A: Yes, she is that CHAZ person.
Q: How do I join the team?
A: You can apply as either a writer, a coder, or an artist using the dev application sheet!
Q: I applied but I never heard back!
A: We tend to onboard applicants based on our present needs. We often go back through older applications and ask if folks are still interested in working on the team - it’s all about if we have a specific project for you to get to work on!
Q: If I join the team, will I be able to implement (X) idea I had?
A: Woah there cowboy! New factions and lore isn’t implemented by individuals - this is a collaborative project, and so our lore and setup is ultimately collaborative too. Especially as a new team member, you won’t be able to implement all the pet projects you want - you’re gonna have to run things by our regional coordinator and lead developer. If you can make a case for it fitting within the theme, lore, and setting of the mod, it might just get a stamp of approval.
Another important thing to note: BTWH isn’t a memefest - it aims to be a relatively serious narrative-focused mod, and so anything implemented can’t just be for the memes - it has to be based on real life political movements and people! If you want to implement something super wacky to the mod, you should wait til release and make a submod!
Community
Q: What is a “yooper”?
A: Yoopers are the inhabitants of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (sometimes referred to as “Superior”). They have gained notoriety among the BTWH community due to their rather humorous flags and merchandise that publicize the area, often proclaiming “AMERICAN BY CHOICE, YOOPER BY DA GRACE OF GOD”. This has led to quite a few memes based off of these flags and “yooper culture” in general.
Q: ...Solanas?
A: Valerie Jean Solanas (1936-1988) was an American lesbian feminist and activist, most notable for writing the SCUM Manifesto and for her attempted murder of pop artist Andy Warhol in 1968. Her rather esoteric feminist beliefs (notably advocating the abolition of men through various means including eugenics and the medical altering of the mind) has lead to quite a few in-jokes about her and her ideology. She co-leads a radical feminist faction in NYC in the mod.
Q: Why are there so many trans people in the community? I’m not complaining, just, wow.
A: Yeah, we’re not sure either.

2020.10.17 18:04 cee_cee_lee [REVIEW] Acne Jensen Boots from TS Zippy, AKA My new everyday boot

I'm so excited to finally give back to this amazing community! I've been lurking here and commenting for months and months, and I finally took the plunge when I saw that TS Zippy was having a 15% off sale on boots. It was a sign that these needed to be in my life.
So strap in. It's going to be a long review, and my first review ever!
Let me just get this out of the way - I love boots. Specifically black boots. My fiancé keeps asking me why I always get a black boot and nothing colorful, and I can't explain why. I just love them. There are so many different varieties out there, and no two pairs are alike! Kind of haha. Cue me stumbling on these bad boys, and I knew I had to have them one way or another. I'm a commuter in NYC who's gone back to full-on commuting, and I felt like these could be my new work-horse boots. I mean, that heel! So walkable!
But I digress.
Disclosures:TS Zippy was (is?) having a boot sale, 15% off. He asked that I write a review, but not for any discount.
Cost: $98 - 15%, so $83Shipping: Fedex $35Total: $118Payment method: Paypal F&F
Order Timeline:9/20 - Reached out to TS Zippy at night (my first time contacting a TS!) and he responded early in the morning with photos of the boot, and pricing.
We chat back and forth, and he was very informative and kind. We talk about materials, and more specifically, sizing, as I've never tried these boots on before. Zippy assures me that my US size 7 will fit in a 38. I say that that's good enough for me, and I pay that day.
9/23 - PSP's received! I haven't seen these in person, so I look at Acne's website and determine these are fab, and I tell them they're great to me. But, I also made sure to ask about the pull tab and whether or not the logo was on there. Zippy sent me even more pictures confirming that they were, and I officially tell him they're good to send.
Zippy also sends me a pic of the shipment label and asks if everything is good. I say yes, but spoiler alert, don't check these things early in the morning. Somehow I missed that my zip code was off by one number. Cue me being angry with myself. (I realize this mistake on the actual delivery date, and it was completely my fault for not catching. This is important to note because it ends up being delivered to Albany, instead of Brooklyn. But the incredible people of FedEx realized what my zip code should have been (?!) and resent it out to me. #grateful)
10/1 - I reach out to Zippy to ask about the status of the shipment. I do realize this is the holiday, but I figured I'd at least ask since at this point it's been seven days.
10/4 - Zippy sends the tracking number, boots are scheduled to arrive on 10/6.
10/6 - Boots are in Albany, NY, because my blurry-ass eyes misread my own gd zipcode. I call FedEx, and they tell me they're already on their way to me. Crisis averted.
10/8 - Boots arrive! They're more beautiful in person than I could have imagined!
Factory Photos
PSP's
My Photos - plus bonus mod-shot!
Authentic Authentic on Poshmark
Quality - 10/10 So, I know I haven't handled these boots in person. But they are so beautiful, and buttery, and fit like a gd glove that it wouldn't feel right giving them anything but a 10 out of 10. The leather is smooth and soft, the metal hardware piece is real, there's a bit of heft in the shoe that just feels like-high quality. Very little smell out of the box, if any other than leather.
Accuracy - 9.9/10 Again, I know I haven't handled this shoe before.. And this is a bold claim. But hear me out. From all of the pictures I've seen, these are pretty spot-on. If I had to give any critique though, I'd say maybe that the logo on the pull-tab might be a hair off? But I'm grasping for straws here. Mine look exactly like the PSP photos, which look just like the factory photos, which in turn look like all of the authentic ones I've seen online. I feel like the V is done well too - I know that's a big concern for a lot of reps, but I feel like this one sits right. Not too high, and not too low.
I got a size 38, which Zippy said would fit a US size 7 no problem. But the authentic I've linked here from Poshmark is a European 37, which is supposed to also fit a US size 7. I'd say if you're unsure of what to go for, make sure you ask about sizing and provide the length of your foot. I'm not sure if I should dock any points for this, as this might just be a difference in sizing in China vs Europe.
The branding on the bottom of the shoe looks to be exact, but the logo on the insole is off by a hair. The logo is pushed up right to the edge of my boots, while the authentic has a little more breathing room. For that, I'll deduct .1, as no one is going to be looking inside my shoe, but it is something worth pointing out.
The heels are the same height, 1.57", and have the same graining/stacking as the authentic. The toe box and metal accent look damn near identical to the authentic as well. I would say though, that the top of the elastic in the insert looks to be a little highetaller on mine than the authentic, but it doesn't look like something that would be a call-out. The shape of the boot also looks to be close to perfect when compared to the authentic in the Poshmark listing, and the one on the website.
Satisfaction - 10000/10 I mean, I love a good black boot. I love a slightly edgier, fashionable, and functional boot even more. This ticks all of the boxes. I walked around my apartment in these, and while they're just a little loose/extra room by the toe, but that's something thick socks can fix. I'd rather them be a hair loose than a hair tight. I also wanted to wait a few days before writing this review, so I could really take these boots for a spin. As a commuter, I expect a lot out a boot. Comfortable, but fashionable (to some degree). This hits all of those marks. Speed walking to the subway, running up and down stairs to get to said subway, running errands, you name it. These boots can do it. I've had them for a week now, and I can tell these are going to be my everyday boots for a long time!
Seller communication and service - 9.9/10 Zippy is wonderful to work with! He always got back to me so quickly, and when I asked about the logo on the pull tab, he sent photos over to help clarify my concerns. The only thing I'd deduct (which is small), is that I had to follow up to ask about the shipping number. But I feel like that's such a small thing overall. I'm really happy that I reached out to him, and I'm going to definitely reach out to him in the future for all of my rep shoes haha.
If you've gotten this far, thanks for reading! Hope this helps you on your journey to find the perfect black boots! <3

So I was separated under honorable conditions 7 months ago out of AIT, I’m wanting to re-enlist but there was a whole “fraudulent enlistment” thing that my chain of command reported my recruiter for because a family member of mine mentioned something they weren’t supposed to, to my commander. He didn’t discharge me for that though, he helped me out and sent me on my way as a separation under honorable conditions. Does anyone know if that report is classified or if they could pull it because my name would be attached to it when I try to re enlist. I don’t want to be shit on in the process of joining wondering if anyone has experience in recruiting or another area that would be helpful. PS I didn’t throw my recruiter under the bus he helped me out a lot and was a huge help in preparing me for basic and getting my mindset stable for BCT, the whole “look forward to the next meal” is what made it a breeze.

I was hoping to snag an option 4 contract/volunteer for airborne school if I get the chance later, but I keep seeing people on this reddit saying that airborne sucks and wrecks your body. Can someone elaborate on that? Is there a high risk of injury, or is it more of a long-term, wear and tear kind of thing? (And does it help if I'm planning to go into 25 or 35 series, which is presumably less hard on your body in general than infantry?) Are there any other downsides to going airborne that I'm missing?
On the other hand, are there any significant upsides to going airborne? I heard you're more likely to get opportunities for "high speed" assignments down the line if you're airborne qualified.

I’m shipping to BCT 12/28 after I graduate college this December. I went to MEPS last week and was surprised my paperwork said I’d be enlisting as an E-3 rather than an E-4. I asked my Army liaison about it and he said I’d be good to promote to E-4 when I show the Army my official college transcript so I thought cool no worries. Here’s my problem: this morning my academic advisor tells me my formal college transcript won’t be ready until mid January. Does anyone know what my chances are for the Army accepting my transcripts while I’m at BCT and allowing me to promote there? I don’t want to lose out on money if I don’t have to.
Edit: added a “he”. Also obligatory I’m not joining for the money but money is nice, ya know.

I'm a college senior (graduating in May) weighing my options. I know the general advice is to not enlist with a degree, but I'm considering it. I want to go to law school but definitely want to spend time working after undergrad. I figure rather than trying to get a job at a law firm I could enlist as a paralegal (27D) and use the GI bill to pay for law school once I get out. I'll be graduating with student loans and would like to start paying them down before going back to school. I have a good GPA (3.84) and a strong desire to serve. I've gotten some leadership experience through school, but I don't really see myself as an officer (besides maybe as a JAG down the line) and don't think I'd have a very competitive OCS packet. Any advice?

I've asked recruiters but can't get a clear answer; can you actually enlist as an 89D/EOD Tech? If so, is it better to enlist as, say, a Combat Engineer then volunteer for EOD school to make it there or jump right into it?

For cadets commissioning active duty out of ROTC, do both time in service/grade and ADSO time begin on the first day you're on active duty, or does commissioning date affect anything? Does advanced camp cadre/gold bar recruiter start the ADSO and promotion clocks earlier than if you just waited to start active duty at BOLC?

Hi I am in the recruiting process right now, I took the ASVAB already, we went to a hotel to get temp checked before going to MEPS and the recruiter said our PT is the following week and we would be staying at the hotel the night before the PT . I believe I heard a few youtubers say this when I was researching other peoples experiences before the ASVAB but I cant find these videos again. So is it normal to stay at the hotel the night before the PT, can someone confirm if this sounds like the due process of things, my family is wondering if thats the case. Thank you!

Hi, can I apply to Army OCS if I had a DOR at USMC OCS? Yes I know I'm dumb for going DOR at USMC OCS, is it possible in anyway to apply for Army OCS? At the time I was completely defeated at USMC OCS, and couldn't see myself completing it at all. I was given a drop code of DOR-18 and it said not recommended to reapply. At the time they told me I could enlist in the marines if I pleased but not come back to OCS. Also would enlisting in the army for 4 years then applying for OCS show I'm committed for a 2nd chance?

Should I join Army Reserve as an officer or focus on civilian career?
Hello, I’m currently a graduate student studying for my masters in IT and also currently in ROTC. I’ve always wanted to serve but also want to have a great civilian career in tech, so I figured I should join the reserves and work one weekend a month and 2-3 weeks every summer while having a paying job in IT in the private sector. I read a similar post here from another guy who’s in the same position as me, except he wants to go active. So I’m kind of in a bind here.
What would you guys do? Should I drop out of ROTC now and focus on my civilian career or do you think I should continue with ROTC and be an officer in their reserves? Or will being an officer take up too much time from advancing my civilian career?

I previously held a (Federal) internship where I disclosed my MJ use. Filled out a form, gave a "it was a mistake I pinky promise it'll never ever happen again" statement, and was good to go.
Is there any chance this will jam me up during my enlistment process?

The first time they told me I had to do it through the learning center, but when I contacted the learning center, they told me that S1 does it.
So I went back again and the S1 NCOIC himself turned me away and said that S1 doesn't do it. I am tried of being turned away, I have been promotable for over a year now because of points and am tired of this. Does anyone know my next course of action? Prior Service USAF and I've been working with a recruiter since beginning of April. Honorable discharge but I have a VA disability rating and need a medical waiver, though there is nothing that is an automatic disqualifier. In January I inprocessed with the Air National Guard and actually had my medical waiver approved in less than 2 months. The only reason I didn't move forward with them is the job availability was extremely slim, and with COVID and some extreme job uncertainty I wanted to go active.
Recruiter has been working with MEPS since April on the waiver. I have all my medical records, and seeing as I have already had another services waiver approved I was extremely optimistic. First long wait was due to COVID, understandable. Then another long wait due to MEPS liaison "losing" paperwork. Then another long wait because some of my records were "illegible" according to someone at Fort Campbell. Worked on getting everything in to a better resolution but now the paperwork has just been sitting with the MEPS liaison for three weeks needing to be approved. My recruiter has been very open with me and communicating, and he says everyone in his chain knows what's happening and isn't happy. He recommended I call the MEPS liaison office and see if I could speak to someone and give them a push, but doesn't know if that will help or make it worse.
Do I call the MEPS liaison or just keep waiting it out? Part of me knows I just need to tough it out and keep waiting, that this process can take forever and the military is always hurry up and wait yadda yadda but I hate things being out of my control. Thanks for letting me vent.

I am in the recruiting process, for active Army. I originally wanted to turn in an OCS packet and sit for the boards however, I scored a 109 on my GT score and I need a 110.
My recruiter and his superior have been all about enlisting me, and when I scored a 109 they told me I can enlist and drop my OCS packet at my first duty station. They also said I can sit for the boards and retest to get the 110, but the acceptance rate is extremely low and I probably won’t be picked up. Lastly, they said they didn’t care what I do because at the end of the day they are in and I’m not.
I have some funny feelings about the way they went about that conversation, are they just trying to enlist people and officer packets are not worth the time?
Can I actually drop my OCS packet as soon as I finish training? After some research, It’s my understanding that your superiors have to back your packet, which makes me think they won’t as soon as you arrive.
What are some positives and negatives of both enlisted and officer?
Is ROTC worth it for your masters degree?
I feel like I have asked a million questions and more than one way and my recruiter either is not being transparent or he just doesn’t know. Please help!

Former enlisted Marine here thinking about joining as an 11B with an Option 40
Looking for opinions and insight, I have recently left the Marine Corps and being an Army Ranger is of interest to me. Ranger school is something everyone can go to and earn a tab, but Option 40 sends you to RASP after AIT, and then you get stationed with the 75th Ranger Regiment correct? So if I signed an 11B with an Option 40 I would just go to AIT, RASP and then the Regiment?
Also I'm not completely sure if I should commission or enlist. I wont do either until I get my degree but with the enlisted side, I for sure get to attend RASP as an 11B, something as an officer I know is not guaranteed. I am confident in my abilities to graduate OCS at a pretty high level, but I feel like that there are unforeseen factors that can deter me from being an Infantry Officer. All I know is, being an Infantry Officer in the Regiment is a lot more of a gamble than just enlisting.

Can anyone offer me their experience / insight on enlisting / commissioning to being an Army Ranger? What is RASP like, what is 11B AIT like? Pros / cons of enlisting / officer? I have a general sense of the pros / cons of enlisting because of The Marine Corps, wondering if its any different in the Army.

Good morning! I am looking into joining the Army Reserve. I have met with a recruiter and I am going to take the ASVAB. I am interested in becoming a pilot. I would prefer flying a fixed wing aircraft like the C-130 or the c-17. However, I would be fine flying helicopters as well. My question is is there a direct way to join and train to become a pilot? I understand I have to become a Warren Officer or an aviation officer. It seems like I may have to start off with a job that is available depending on my ASVAB score and then prepare a packet for the Warren officer candidate school. The reason I am looking into the reserve and not active duty is because I don’t want to get stationed far from home or in another country.
The jobs I am interested in so far are 155a and 153a.
Thanks you, Justin Calero

I'm going through the process rn. I've informed my recruiter that I smoked weed briefly freshman year of college, and that I haven't smoked since (true). He said not to worry about it, and to never mention that to anyone again, which, ok no problem.

2020.10.07 17:44 RossLeftyWesty my primary/open RPLND blog

Hey all, here's my RPLND story. Figured I'd post it so anyone searching for info can find it. Hopefully it is useful. I am a 31 yo white male and I was diagnosed 3 months ago in July 2020. I am in pretty good physical shape with a desk job. If I had a choice at all, I wanted to try and avoid chemo. It turned out I had stage IIA as shown on my scans. My testicle tumor was 60% semonima, 20% teratoma, 10% yolk sac, 10% embryonal. My blood tumor markers were never elevated beyond the normal range. I did around 3 CT scans over the course of August, September, and early October before finally having the RPLND in early Oct. The scans showed I had really just one lymph node that was enlarged beyond 1cm and maybe a few more that were growing, but <1cm. In all, everything was growing very very slowly, if growing at all. Surgery seemed like the right choice and I was glad it was an option for me. At the time of writing this post, I have not received the pathology report for the lymph nodes. Its possible they are all benign, meaning I was truly Stage IA. Its possible some will be malignant but I can proceed on surveillance. Its also possible that more than a few will be malignant and the doctors will recommend 2 rounds of EP chemo. I will update this at a later date to reflect my new discoveries.

Day 1 (day of surgery):
I had my surgery performed by Dr Joel Sheinfeld of Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC. He is one of the best, if not the best, for this surgery, in the US. It was very helpful to know I had this level of experience operating on me and I wasnt even very nervous prior to the surgery. I remember being very nervous before my orchiectomy, so the juxtaposition between being very nervous for a minor surgery vs being fairly calm for a massive surgery was interesting to reflect on. I had to arrive by 5:20am and was scheduled to go under the knife at 7:30am.
Most of this day was a blur after I woke up. I later on saw texts from my friends indicating they had heard from my dad and hoped I was doing okay around noon, so the surgery must have lasted around 4.5 hours. I have no idea where I was but my first real memory was someone peeling stickers off of my abdomen following the surgery. I remember this being excruciatingly painful, somewhere around a 7 or 8 - I was probably yelling "oh f**k" and things like that without realizing it. It wasn't long before they had me on some pain stuff to get that under control. I made my way to my room and at some point a few hours later, a nurse came by and asked if I wanted to try walking. Getting up from laying down was very painful. It was somewhere around a 6 or 7 on the pain scale. Once up and moving for a few minutes, the pain subsided and I could walk gingerly on my own. The nurses pretty much declared that I was okay to walk on my own. At this point I was only on a patient controlled analgesic. This wasnt really cutting out the discomfort for me once the anesthesia from surgery wore off and even laying down was a bit uncomfortable. Still, it is such a big surgery that I just slept for most of the day. Aside from staples on the incision, all I had was a foley catheter in my junk. That was nice at first when I really didnt want to move much. No food or water this day. My day ended with a phone call from my dad, who said "oh yea, forgot to tell you, Dr Sheinfeld said no nerve damage occurred during the surgery" so I am extremely hopeful that I have no lasting retrograde ejaculation issues. I probably wont test it out for a few weeks or a month anyways.
Day 2
One thing I did not read about or expect was the constant barrage of people coming in to check on you or perform tests overnight. A nurse came in to take my vitals at midnight, 2am, and 5am. The 5am one also included getting out of bed to have your weight taken, which still was painful. Someone also came in at 3am to draw my blood to check electrolytes and other things. I usually had a visit from a member of the surgical team around 6am as well. Between all that and your discomfort and the general uncomfortable nature of a hospital room/bed, I really didn't sleep much at night. This unfortunately proved to be the case each and every night I was there. As I said, getting out of bed was still a pain, probably around level 6 still, but I wanted to start moving to try and help speed my recovery. I probably walked around 2 miles on the second day. Other than that, I was usually in bed, sleeping or playing on my phone for a few minutes before losing focus and falling asleep. The doctors hooked up IV Tylenol to my line which was superb at cutting away at the discomfort. When coupled with the PCA button, which I pretty much was pressing every time it was available, I was feeling great and slept deeply during the day. The foley catheter started to irritate the tip of my penis, as if a small amount of urine made its way around the catheter in my bladder and was pooling around in my urethra, but this was more like a nuisance compared to other things, so no big deal. No food or water this day.
Day 3
This morning, the nurse was kind enough to let the IV Tylenol make its way into my body before making me get out of bed to take my weight. I weighed in around 15 lbs heavier than prior to surgery due to all the swelling and fluid retention. The IV helped a ton and getting out of bed was more like a 4 or 5 on the pain scale. Probably walked around 3 miles throughout the day. On day 2, in one my deep sleeps, I accidentally partially pulled out my main IV line in my right hand. They moved the IV line to a secondary IV that was set up while I was in surgery. This was on my left wrist and proved problematic, as I was starting to get magnesium IV drips. For some reason, the magnesium burned like hell up and down my whole arm when introduced at this location, more pain than the incision at this point. They slowed the drip down a bit and this helped a bit but it was still a bit painful. The foley catheter was irritating me more now, and bothered me when walking around. It was like light pinch on your penis tip with each step - not terrible but not fun. No food this day but was cleared to start having ice chips/water - 8oz in the morning and 8oz in the afternoon.
Day 4
Huge progress in pain on this day. While I still had to move slowly, the pain level from getting up from bed was like a 2 or 3 and was manageable from here on out at the incision site. I still was receiving IV Tylenol but I essentially stopped using the PCA button. Probably walked around 3 miles this day and still did a decent amount of sleeping during the day. I was finally upgraded to clear liquid diet in the afternoon, so I had a small cup of beef broth for dinner, which was sooo good after not having anything for around 4 days. The broth seemingly helped trigger my first bowel movement too before bed, so I finally pooped after 4 days. That was great, because one of the precursors for getting your catheter out was having a bowel movement. I was becoming more mobile and having the catheter in with its long tube dragging around was super annoying and I was becoming sick of the pinching sensation. This day I received one IV line of magnesium and one of potassium and some other stuff. Everything burned going in again around the level 5 or 6 pain level in my arm. I hated these. I also didnt sleep very well this night, probably due to stopping use of the PCA.

Day 5
Hallelujah - The foley catheter came out in the morning. Instant relief from the stinging/pinching sensation and I was stoked. Unfortunately, you still have to track your urine output, so I started peeing in a jug and reported the amount to the nurses at various intervals. I was still lugging around the IV tower too, so I wasnt fully mobile. I received two packs of potassium this day and that again sucked with the burning sensation. Even other medicine that did not burn before was starting to burn when being infused. At this point, I asked the nurse to set up a new IV in a different location. I wish I had done this sooner as it seemed to help a lot with the burning. I started to really feel the isolation on this day. You were only allowed one visitor per day for a few hours due to COVID and were otherwise on your own. The medical staff is all swamped and cant chat for very long so youre left to your own devices. Walking was a decent way to pass the time, but I was confined to my hospital floor which was maybe 50'x20' and walking in circles gets old quickly. I missed getting fresh air and the sun on my face. All along, I was told I was supposedly getting out on Day 6, but I barely saw the surgical team this day and I started to suspect I wasnt leaving anymore on the following day. This turned out to be true when the surgical team stopped by around 7pm to check in on me. All the liquids had me super bloated and I felt like crap throughout the day. Even though I was on the liquid diet, I didnt eat much. The nurses gave me a suppository and that helped a bit, but it was mostly temporary relief and walking didnt help a ton. I was super thankful that I could lay nearly flat at night, because that finally helped relieve the bloating. Didnt sleep at all this night.
Day 6
This is where I'm at now. Finally saw the head surgeon, Sheinfeld, today. He liked the way my incision looked and how I'm not having much nausea. Upgraded to low fat solid diet. As long as I dont throw up or report a lot of nausea, I am out of here tomorrow morning after the staples are removed. I am psyched and am eating incredibly slowly so as not to jeopardize my release. I weighed in at only ~12 lbs over my pre-surgical weight, so I am shedding some swelling/bloating. I am sweating a ton, so I'm sure that's helping. In a much better mood knowing I'll probably be home tomorrow. Even convinced the nurses to give me my normal clothes back instead of wearing my gown and also to disconnect me from the IV line, so I am fully mobile now! Feeling confident and now just awaiting my pathology for my lymph nodes and hoping I am DONE with testicular cancer after only 3 months. Even though many are done after the orchiectomy and need no further treatment, I still feel pretty fortunate to be possibly done with this thing after only 3 months and possibly after only two surgeries (sure I still have a long recovery in front of me, but the hard part is hopefully over). Some guys on here have been fighting for a lot longer than that and I salute them. I've overheard my roommates conversations with his doctors and he has some kind of harsh nerve issues, can barely walk and is bedridden, and they think it is possibly a metastasis to his spine. His battle has sounded very tough and I don't think I could handle it as well as he has been handling it. His strength has definitely helped keep me focused and centered on my own battle and has had me feeling very grateful for how treatable this cancer truly is for most people.

Anyways, that's been my experience so far. Cheers guys, feel free to reach out to me on this post or privately with any questions.
Edit: thanks for the award!

2020.09.28 02:24 tsinnyc30 *TS* *NSW* I can't trust men, so I don't know how to love...where do i start to heal?

tw nsw rape/child sexual abuse. I write in a way thats very vivid, thats how the images in my mind work. Maybe its also because I am a writer, and it is hella drilled into us about details. All about the details. I know this can upset some people. So there is the warning.
I was a child of sexual abuse. Which made my rape at 23 worse. Much worse.
When I was 5, I was in foster care. I was a super feminine acting boy. (I am a trans woman now). My foster brothers and male figures never used to play with me. Saying things like:
"Don't you want to play with the girls, sissies don't like sports"
"Take ya gay, useless ass on somewhere" They would always leave me
In came Carl. He always included me. He was 16/17 and he was amazing at first. He let me play super Nintendo with him. He took me to the park. He snuck me candy like Reese cups, when my Grandma told me no. I loved him. Growing up with my twin in foster care, I felt abandoned. Because I was a feminine boy, i felt doubly abandoned.
He started asking me if I wanted to cuddle with him at night. My grandma was tired and he was always so nice to me, I don't even think she had a second thought about it. The first few sleep overs with Carl was beautiful. He would just hold me. He would tell me scary stories, then I would run to the bathroom in the dark, running back to his bad shaking. He would get me cupcakes. He would hold me, and tell me how he loved me. Until one night, it changed. He smelled funny to me, the-now-gorgeous-familar smell of Marijuana. He told me he wanted to show me a secret game. The games of men. Not knowing any better, I said show me. I loved and trusted him at 5. He was the big brother I always wanted...replacing the abandoned feeling I felt at my parents. He kissed me. He had vitiligo, and a pink spot that was so unique on the corner of his lips on his right side. I remeber the feeling of his third degree burned hands on my body. His mother tortured him and locked him in the closet for weeks on end in the Bronx. He had cigarette burns all over his body. He was still attractive. Beautiful hazel eyes. Brown skin like mines. Full pink lips. He was a boxer, he turned the hands his mother tried to take from him into weapons that made the street nickname him "Mean Machine", with how savagely he would fight guys on the street. He was also a child of sex abuse, once the system found him at 7, and placed him in group homes, which later, in my teenage years when I found out, made me totally forgave him. He did love me, even though he hurt me, but ultimately as a late teenager, he was just reliving a cycle. It does not excuse him, but compared to my rape at 23, I can forgive Carl.
He pulled his pants down and put my tiny hands on his bigger genitalia. That was all we did the first time. He called me pretty.
"You really look like a little girl with ya long curly hair and bambi eyes".
He orgasmed and because it didn't feel bad, I didn't see it as bad. It was just a game.
He then grabbed me softly and forced me to look at him.
"You can't tell. If you tell, I will die. You don't want me to die right? If you tell, I will be gone and you will have nobody to play with, I will be killed horribly. This is our secret game. Only us. Okay?"
I was heartbroken. I let out a high pitch shrill cry. As I clang to him and repeated:
"Puleazhh don't die...please don't die. Please don't die...i lub you."
He held me again and we fell asleep.
The game was simple at first, just touching, but quickly it progressed.
The 4th time I saw him, he put whip cream on himself. "I have a treat for you. If you play our secret game well, you will get a reward. You have to lick it off"
So I did. I remember the smell of him. His just turned into a man pheromones plugging my noise. The sweat of his skin, and the sweetness of the whip cream. I gagged horribly. But he told me i was doing a Good job even though it was barely fitting. I remember his fluid on my face.
He wiped us both off and got a big ass bag of candy out his closet. Again...the behavior was painted as something good by him.
(Im legit unnerved even though I can't help writing so candidly. To do that to a child, to lie and use manipulation is utterly insidious. To use my emotions, that he should have protected.....it id fucking gross. Gross. A 5 year old. What was sexy about me, I still occasionally peed the bed, I was dirty from always climbing and exploring things, etc...but then its not about that. But its just....ugh. I know he picked me because I was feminine and because I was a loner by the nature of what I am, a transgender individual.) This went on for months. His "you are so beautiful like a little princess", his cuddles, his playfulness. I loved it. Even the sex acts we did, i didn't mind because it was not violent nor did it hurt at that point. It was definitely uncomfortable/ weird and there was no sexual thrill for me. The only thrill was for me to please the brother I loved. If it pleased him, I was happy with that. I had turned 6 and a week later he brought me upstairs. He smelt like straight alcohol. He kissed me aggressively. "I missed my princess" His aggressiveness was scaring me. He had never acted that way before. "Ima go to De-lores. Goodnight. You being weird. (my adopted mom/ I call her grandma too).
"No...u can't leave yet. You don't miss me?"
He pinned me down, as I yelled for him to let me go. He placed his hand over my mouth and nose, until I almost couldn't breathe and thrashed in the bed. He bent me over and tried to penetrate me, but I was wayyyyyy to small for that. So it never went in, but it was sooo painful. The edges of my hole, burned from the friction of him desperately tryna penetrate me......
He let me down on the cream color carpet of his room as I cried and hit him.
"U HURTED ME...CARL! YOU HURTED MY BUTT. YOU HURTED ME!" HE HUGGED ME AS I HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE A WHISTLE NEAR THE STAIRS LEADING TO THE SECOND FLOOR.
He placed me in the upstairs bathroom.
"If anybody asks why you up here, tell them you were using the bathroom. And im sorry. Im sorry. You forgive me. I'll make it up to you. I promise. Say you forgive me...please."
"I...forgived...u...."
I said wiping snot away.
A week later. My grandma sat me down. She asked if anyone was touching us. She looked evil though. I know she would never hurt me, but I loved Carl like family. She had hell and brimstone in her irises, and she got into one of her righteous rants, where she said she would kill for me, kill for my brother, nobody would hurt us.
I don't know if she meant it, but she scared me into silence. I don't blame her. Its hard even bringing those topics up without emotion. But I didn't want Carl to die. So I shut up. At 6, I shut up. I didn't want him to die. And her words made what he said reality in my head.
I never went to him anymore though after my Grandma's talk and him tryna penetrate me. I never let him get me alone. He would try to bribe me with food, candy, video games, begging, clothes, money...but i never went.
He went to Juvie a few months later for stabbing a boy in the face over street wars.
Life was normal until 11. In fourth grade, I was taking a NYS official test, I was answering a question about the Native American indigenous to NY state and boom: (There were two paintings in the upstairs hallway. My grandma had a picture of a Native man, with striking features, in a swamp, grabbing a snake. It was next to a picture of a black girl playing double dutch. That question connected back to that picture)
It all played out in my mind like a movie. I didn't even realize I had suppressed it that much. I fought back tears and (I work well in stress, idk why but I do), I got a 97%.
After that day I became hypersexual. When I think about it, I always was....touching boys and girls. Kissing girls and boys, playing house and being the wife. Always too fucking touchy and in people's personal space. But I guess at 11, puberty hit me full force and the idea of sex became something constant in me. Before that it was all mimicry of what happened to me. At 11, these thoughts entered me and would not leave. I wanted real sex after that moment. It is hell to be hypersexual at 11. My southern-upbrung Grandma was definitely not ready for that. Then my thoughts were about boys. I was consumed with them. Especially older men. Taking my friend in the closet and telling him I love him, while I pull his penis out and offer him a blow job.
"...ok...ok...idk..but if its you...ok"
I started fucking myself with things. The ends of a big screw driver with a soft silicon handle. An ugly yellow toy banana I found at Family Dollars. Fingers. It was like older men knew I was in a heat, I didn't want. I would masturbate like 7 times a day. It was never enough. It was all consuming. An older man who liked me gave me a dildo, he never had sex with me though. We would just talk about how it felt when I penetrate myself. He would stutter and cum to my stories. (I lose myself in good anal sex. I still do, I dissassociate in a good way, the noise of the world falls away and all I am in those moments are a body, feeling. There is no analyzing life, or existential crises. There is not a thousand thoughts in my head. No ptsd or bpd or bipolaor depression or all those mental illness therapists told me I had directly and not so directly) This feeling of shame came when I couldn't stop the thoughts. I was something bad and deviant. My thoughts were deviant, so I locked them up tightly. Even though they were ever present Carl came out of juvie/prison when I was 12. His 6 pack all those years ago had turned into an 8 pack. His slender, toned teen body, had grown into a young man's body. I was drawn to him. He felt indebted to me.
I remember at 12, when of his hood friends used to flirt with me. Nothing crazy, just a little flirtatious. Always tryna wrestle me. Always tryna get my attention.
I came home one afternoon to him surprising me, him agitated.
"Jay is fucking with you D?" "No he is cool" "Lemme know cuz I will end any nigga for you. You hear me...any of them. You mines. You hear me!"
My grandma sat on her bed smiling. Like aww look at the older brother being protective.
It wasn't protection though. He still felt like i belonged to him some way even though he never made anymore moves. He also felt guilty.
He was always giving me stuff. Clothes. Food. Money. Anything. It could have been his last.
I would watch him shower. He would leave the door open slightly. I would peek and look at his naked body, until my mind went crazy in heat. One Night, he left his shirt on the floor as he showered. I had a small t-shirt on and these too tight underwear. On the same cream color floor where he tried to penetrate me, i pentrated myself with that, ugly yellow banana, inhaling the intoxicating smell of his shirt. I was so into it, I didn't feel his eyes on me.
He was watching me smell his shirt and fuck myself.
He was hard and staring when I came on his rug. "We can't do that nomore. What i did was wrong....but fuck...you looked so sexy....still with the soft skin and big bambi eyes." "Fuck all that...i want you to fuck me..." "What's gotten into you...you used to be so innocent and sweet. We don't have to. I will always be be ya side. You still sexy though God. Even more sexy." "I don't know how to handle what you exposed to me. I want dick in me all the time. 24/7. I dream about it. I day dream about it. I fantasize about it. Please Carl, fuck me...please" "Im too big and people in the house and...."
I got up knocking all the shit off his dresser. There's a rage in me, a darkness. A need. Impulsivity. Like every emotion is competing for best actress.
I started crying in pure fucking frustration.
"So you could try to fuck me at 6, you pedo, but 12 is too old? Fuck you nigga. I hate what you did to me. You made me so fucking weird and now!!!!! You don't want to FUCKING continue. I hate you. Fucking die."
He hugged me like when I was little.
"You went me that bad? To finally have me truly take ya virginity. Wait a little longer okay. But look at me...clearly I'm excited. Just wait...ok? Sex starves D might be the seseries. (Him referring to me at 5/6 as sexy 🤢🤮, when I think about that disgusting convo) I pouted. He gave me 300 from his drug business to shut up.
After that, every time he would pass me, he would feel on me. I'd wear little t shirts where my nipples poked out and pajamas too small, so my little butt could poke out.
He would touch me and kiss me in rushing. He was never home, always in the street.
At 13, he died from a gunshot wound to the heart. He never did get to fuck me.
(Sometimes, when im depressed, and analytical, I think if all that really did propel me on my way to my life now. I pass as a woman and live an alright life, even with the trauma, but my Mom says when things like that happen to us so young, they become apart of our psyche. Not to say I would have been a sterotypical masculine male....but is this why I like being called princess and good girl, is this one of the reasons why I so desperately clung to womanhood, is this why, especially young, all my sexual fantasies were of me being penetrated by older, well hung, developed men. How much of it is my true nature, how much was groomed into me. The choking, the hypersexuality in my youth, the crazy sex adventures I found myself in. I don't think about it often. Its one of those questions that if I let it sit too long in me, will undo me. I love my transition (mostly) but that thought is scary. To think that, the person I am today can be attributed, at the least, slightly, to my childhood trauma)
The real trauma happened at 23. When i was 23, I dated this guy named Jason for 6 months. I had just started transistioning for a few months. He took me out. I met his close friends. I met his cousins. The sex was good, he was sweet and passionate. I felt like i was falling for him. Lucky. Special
I was a new trans woman, and most guys arent always so kind to not so passable trans women.
He treated me like a woman. How I always wanted to be treated.
Up until the night I told him no.
We had went out on a night on the town. The place is near west 4th street in NYC. It is called the Fat Black Pussy Cat. He bought me these bomb ass nachos and like 13 tequila shots. My stomach was queasy and I couldn't keep my head from spinning.
I get home and boom, sleep.
His body weight and his massive hands on me woke me up. (5'9 150 to his 6'5 250 pure muscled body). He was an athlete and he had went to prison. I never saw it as a red flag because it was a white collar crime.
He wanted sex.
I said no. I'm nauseous. In the morning bae.
It took my brain 10 minutes to catch up to what was going on.
My laughs and his stoic face.
My giggles and "stop playing Jason, in the morning im ride it good daddy." fall on a face that was determined.
His hand on my throat squeezing tighter and tighter.
When I realized what was happening (i'm also a childhood survivor as well). I fought. Two rights to his eyes and nose. He laughed. I ran for my kitchen, and picked up a knife but he slammed me.
Those first few moments were straight anxiety. Me, running full speed over my couch; him catching my leg and my face hitting the floor.
Me, head butting him right in his lip. I sunk my teeth into his shoulder blade. He slammed my body face first into my living room wall.
I remember the sound of glass breaking as he slammed my back against my glass coffee table. Bits of glass, like glass splinters, on the side of my spine.
I remember the anxious feeling turning into a doomed one, when my strength and stamina didn't match up to his. Even just 10 months on estrogen shots and anti testestorone pills had made me weaker. Like 50 percent weaker
His laughter in my ear as he said:
"I like girls with heart, ya are more satisfying to break"
After 20 minutes he got tired. Not physically tired. Tired of this fight in me.
I was on my last wind. Every nerve in my body was in fire from fighting with him so long. I grew up fighting and winning as a feminine boy. But as a trans women, on hrt, a high dosage, its just not the same.
I remember my teeth cutting into my jaw as he slammed my head into the kitchen tiles, the hemoglobin left the taste of iron in my head.
He punched my ribs, knocking the wind out of me. Stomped my right hand. I just laid there, as the reality of my situation set in.
Im not getting away.
"Isn't this why you transistioned...to entice men. Didn't you do this to become mines"
I dissassociated as he choked me until i couldn't breathe. Color flashed in front of my eyes. I focused on my cat in a corner, a white ball, like this had happened to her before . I didn't want to die from fighting for the right over my body. So I mentally left.
I focused on a dustball under my stove
I stared at a dead sparrow on my kitchen window ledge I had never noticed. I imagined I was that bird. Dead. If I'm dead, I can't feel and if I can't feel, this is not happening to me.
His kisses on my shoulder....and his "there's my baby girl", was worse than the rape or beating. That memory lives under my skin. His attempted intimacy daring rape. How....how....
It makes me so mad and digusted. Like I wanna take my nails to my skin to kill that fucking memory.
I wanted him to be evil. You are a fucking monster, fucking show it, you disgusting, deviant, criminally sadistic bastard. If you wanna be evil.
He caressed and kissed my unresponsive body.
Pushing his dick into my dry walls, slightly ripping me.
It was messy because I was not ready nor did I prep. It hurt because he went in dry.
I didn't even scream, as I felt myself tear a little. I just stared....i was death in those moments.
He left me there saying "I love you Daisy". I stayed on the ground for 30 minutes. No thoughts. I just stared. My kitty Carmen licked my face and I cried so horribly, stirred back to reality by her. She left white hairs on my chin as she turned into a ball under my neck.
He left anal fissures in me and a hemorrhoid. It hurt to use the bathroom for 10 days. He had fractured the bone below my right index finger. My left eye was filled with blood. When he slammed my head in the kitchen, blood filled into it. I looked like an extra in the Walking dead.
I never told because I am transgender. They don't care if we live let alone if we are raped.
I swallowed it. Never telling anybody for years, going to school the next day like I was in a car accident and smiling.
I sometimes attack men in my sleep. My exs always tell me how wild I sleep at night and how they can't touch me when im deep sleeping or I become violent.
I have extreme pstd at times. Fits of paranoia and rage.
I don't trust men. Nor do I think I can ever conventionally date again. I try but I leave or dip...or go m.i.a. i just don't feel connected to me like I once did. Its been so many secual wrongs done to me.
But him making me almost love him and then brutally raping me, was the one sexual trauma to truly do me in.
Even if i like a guy, there's a subliminal voice in my head telling me:
"All men are predators, some just are more good at hiding it"
I never hated my transition until that moment. That sheer terror of my body failing me. The sheer terror of my physical strength changed. The utter hopelessness.
"Damn I made myself a fucking target. I had to be a fucking tranny. I'm weak now and can't even protect myself."
And i don't think I can ever trust any man 100 percent. Maybe...at best...99 percent.
But it has made me lonely and depressive. How do I love again? How do I learn to trust?
I don't want to die without finding true love but at this progression...im be an old trans woman with mad cats. Bitter and jaded, seeing the world as evil.
I used to be so carefree. Now I trust nothing.
How do I get a piece of the old me back?
How do I move on?
The memories being like movies. I can see all the details.
 Im ready to heal.
